How Would You Rate Pacman's Defense? His "slickness"?

I dunno about past it, but perhaps 'peaked' would be a better word. Everyone has now seen what he does and what his methods are, and can create a gameplan against it if they're good enough. Plus, what I've noticed is that there was a transition period from the second Marquez fight, where he was...
- Wild
- Impatient
- Gung-ho
- Didn't place his shots smartly
- Off-balance too much
Then came the De La Hoya fight, in which he...
- Was very patient
- Used smartly-picked shots, i.e. straight left as a jab
- Excellent footwork
- Controlled the range at his leisure
- Had relentless head movement
Against Hatton, though, he looked ever so slightly flustered and not as comfortable, despite landing at will. If Hatton's punch resistance hadn't have been so shot by that point, he could continued to pressure Pacquiao and make him fight on his notoriously weak backfoot.
Now, obviously I wouldn't agree with Hatton when he said he won that second round, but I thought he looked OK coming out of it until that shot.
As for Cotto, he was looking good in those first 3 rounds. Hell, that opening jab in the first 10 seconds of round 1 damn near sent Pacquiao flying backwards across the ring! Gone, however, was Pacquiao's head movement and ring smarts he'd shown against De La Hoya.
Along with the Clottey fight, he's since returned to the off-balance, unintelligently picked swarm of shots with not a lot of regard for medium-range defence. I don't give Margarito much of a chance, but there are certain things he can do to make life difficult for Pacquiao.Comment

I expect pacquiao to fight Margarito the same way he fought Oscar. The fight will look like a carbon copy without the quit. I expect a 10 th round KO, not a tko, a KO.I dunno about past it, but perhaps 'peaked' would be a better word. im one of manilla ice biggest fans but im also an unbiased boxing fan!!! so id place his defence at a 6 maybe a 7 at the best. for the most part his defense relies on his offence and at times when he doesnt throw he gets hit . just look at the cotto fight !!!!Comment

In which case, a hailstorm of straight lefts awaits the 'Tornado'. :laff2:
Margarito will be jogging towards him and BAM! - left jabs and crosses straight through the guard, each time. He'll be doing that cheesy smiling **** and trying to eat them up, but come that tenth round (as you said), it'll be like Mosley all over again.
... and the cheating bastage will still be smiling as he struggles to his feet and fails to make the 10-count. I can almost see it now.Comment

Roach always has a 'game plan' which includes defense. If he improvises I think his defense goes down, but if he follows Roach's plans his defense goes up. I think probably about 5 or 6 without Roach.Comment

IMO, his defense is a 5. His offense is a 8. He's great offensively and possibly the best offensive Boxer currently, but he's not highly consistent.Comment

Margarito looked like Ali(not exactly Ali but his defense all of a sudden looked sharp) when he fought the Gracia dude or whatever his last name is.We know Pacquiao is an offensive machine, but I really do think he's defense is underrated. He's shown an ability to slip punches when not engaging or when in a defensive position. Of course, he does get hit more often because he's an offensive fighter. But how do you rate his defense?
When you're fighting come forward guys who stay right in front you, you're whole career, the least you can do is slip some punches.
The most accurate boxer Pacquiao fight was Clottey who landed 70 out of 300 which is pretty accurate but not the most accurate numbers. Pacquiao didn't look slick nor defensive at all.
Marquez, another very accurate boxer, landed at will against Pacquiao.
I think his D and slickness is not underrated. It's how is supposed to be against come forward guys that are known for having **** defense. Excluding Clottey of recent opponents they all have **** defense.Comment
