Meh. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion I suppose. But it did make me wonder why Jack Johnson never caught on with black folks the way Joe Louis did.Comment

Joe luis was in a different era. But even then he couldn't put a foot wrong. HE was feed all his lines from the media and he couldn't rebel in any way.
However some people say this "humble image" was part of his demeanour anyway.Comment

Well that's exactly what i meant. Jack Johnson was the 1st black heavyweight champion. He was Joe Louis before there ever was a Joe Louis. and yet he never garnered the kind of fame or endearment with the black community that the brown bomber did. It couldnt have just been as simple as the difference in demeanor.Comment

let me tell you something though: He was the Ali of his time for sure!!Well that's exactly what i meant. Jack Johnson was the 1st black heavyweight champion. He was Joe Louis before there ever was a Joe Louis. and yet he never garnered the kind of fame or endearment with the black community that the brown bomber did. I wouldn't mind seeing ALi vs johnson in a pre fight trash talking contest. I think it would be a draw.Comment

Williams was shot by that point of his career and shouldn't of even been in the ring. He was never the same after losing a kidney (after being shot by a state trooper) and was living in squalor during the run up to the fight. If you want to see him during his prime watch Williams-Liston I. That version of Williams walks through everything Ali thows at himI found some of the arguments bert sugar used quite strange. I am assuming he has watched the cleveland williams fight because in that fight ALi knocked Cleveland williams down going backwards. Bear in mind Ali wasn't a puncher.
The guy sitting next to bert sugar was just a tool.
Back to the list nice to see: Tyson, Moore, Hagler and Duran mentionedComment

I do agree that Williams was past it.Williams was shot by that point of his career and shouldn't of even been in the ring. But ALi wasn't in his prime when Williams was. Ali wasn't even in his prime when he fought Williams.
Anyway some people say the liston performance was better like George chuvalo in "facing ali". So I can use that performance(S) aswell. The anchor punch was equally as impressive.
But that still doesn't negate the fact that he was able to drop a fairly good chinned opponent going backwards. Bearing in mind that he wasn't a puncher whereas ray Robinson was.Last edited by Vadrigar.; 06-16-2010, 07:24 AM.Comment
