I thought Hasegawa was a top 5 P4P fighter before this fight, and I think his skills are up there with the best of them. But just like Shadow pointed out, he fights with his hands down after he throws punches a lot of times and it cost him against Montiel. I was neutral going into this fight, I didn't have a rooting interest and I like both guys. I will say one thing though. This division is deep as fuck. You got Montiel, Hasegawa, Donaire, Mares, Perez, Darch, and Agbeko and that other Asian cat. And given that Hasegawa has beaten none of these guys, I will have to admit people overrated him. But these guys we are talking about are new comers to the division except for Agbeko and Perez and Hasegawa beat who was put in front of him during his title reign.

I'm really not criticizing the stoppage that much, I'm just saying Hasegawa deserved the benefit of the doubt IMO with the round being almost over and it being a unification fight. Hasegawa was hurt, no doubt about that and he did get hit with some follow up punches but the fight having the significance that it had and with the round being almost over, I think Hasegawa should've gotten the chance to recover in the minute between rounds. His eyes were clear when Cole stepped in from what I saw and he started complaining a little to Cole as well so his faculties were intact.Comment

No. Meldrick Taylor, got up from a knockdown and hand his wits about him. Hasegawa was hung up in the ropes taking big punches showing no ability to defend himself.Comment

I wasn't comparing Taylor's state to Hasegawa's state, my point was that timing of the round matters in a stoppage.Comment

I don't see how Hozumi got exposed? You guys get off that ****. He ended the reign of a 14 defense champion. And he was a hypejob for that? He even gave the guy a rematch and put him on ice in 8. And he is a hypejob for that?
GTFO, really.
If every champion that losses is 'exposed' then fuck. None of your favorite fighters that has a loss is a legit champ, their all exposed when they lose.
And everyone who is defending Hozumi isn't even talking about the ko. Their talking about the time left on the clock. YOU DON'T STOP A TITLE FIGHT WITH 1 SECOND LEFT. IT SCREAMS CONTROVERSY.Comment

lol, there are so many people posting in this thread that clearly havent actually watched the fight. this is the first time ive seen hasegawa fight, and on the whole he looked very impressive. he got caught by a beautiful combination by montiel. hasegawa could easily have outboxed montiel for the full 12, but the puncher montiel lived up to his tag. this fight shouldnt be taken as evidence that hasegawa isnt a top level bantamweight, it was just montiel's night. i saw no problem with the stoppage, it's not the referee's job to watch the clock, it's his job to watch the fighter. hasegawa was done when the fight was stopped...Last edited by dcull111; 04-30-2010, 11:02 PM.Comment
