Martinez is all wrong for Cotto.
Martinez takes away orthodox fighters' jabs, which is one of Cotto's main weapons, and damages them in the process. One of the reasons I picked him over Pavlik is because I knew this. He catches jabs and comes over the top with his own jab every time, he doesn't stop trying it either.
A couple of Cotto's advantages at 140 and somewhat at 147 was his strength and bruising power. He won't have that at 154. Martinez would be bigger, stronger, and faster, it's very, very, very hard to win with all those advantages against you, especially against someone with good skills, chin, and heart to match.

Just to clarify for ******s...CAN as in is capable of...not I think he WOULD beat him.
If Cotto beats Foreman impressively, at this stage in his career, why not try and grab the lineal Middleweight crown?
Before I get called a "stan"....although I'd be surprised if I was as most know me...I think Cotto gets absolutely mauled by pretty much all of the top guys at 154-160.....PWill, Pavlik, Angulo, Kirkland...those guys all brutally stop Cotto.
Martinez's style is one that gives Cotto a chance. He's bigger but he doesn't use his size...he's not a volume puncher or that big of a puncher.
Cotto has trouble with big pressure fighters and/or fighters who throw a lot.
Now before people make the Pacquiao comparison....Martinez is not as fast(his hand speed is SEVERELY overrated) and he doesn't throw 5 and 6 punch combinations like Pacquiao.
Martinez is also nowhere near as slick as people make him out to be. Freaking Kelly Pavlik landed 45% of his power punches on him. Cotto is more accurate than Pavlik and Williams.
I'm not saying Cotto would beat Martinez. If I had to pick, even if Cotto carries 154 well, I'd still probably pick Martinez.
But it's a winnable fight, and if Cotto won it'd be an ideal way to go out for him.Comment

My counter however....Martinez is a rhythm fighter. That rhythm, as I felt Pavlik showed, could actually be disrupted by a timed jab. If there's one thing Cotto's got, it's timing.
Martinez is there to be hit, and Cotto is more accurate than Pavlik or Williams...and you can close the distance on him. Cotto places his punches well, and Martinez doesn't put together a lot of combinations unless he's facing a guy not throwing back(Pavlik after the cut).
Cotto has problems with combination punchers. If Martinez circles and jumps in with the one two and occasional right hook, I think Cotto can weather that...although all of this is contingent on him carrying the weight well and him not being totally shot.
I think Cotto's stamina, or lack thereof, would be his ultimate downfall but like I said...in my opinion, the ONE guy that Cotto would have a chance against won the lineal MW championship....why not give it a go?Comment
