It's a matter of opinion though. I can respect this thread. Cotto might surprise us with Manny S at 154.
I think Cotto CAN beat Martinez

Haha, I saw it coming but PRAYED that NSB had some rational humans left.
People see one guy beat another and go "bahhhh no way", and pay zero attention to styles.
Martinez beat Pavlik and (arguably) Williams....but I firmly think Cotto has a much better chance against Martinez than he does Pavlik and Williams.
Apparently the majority of NSB can't grasp that concept.
absolutely possible especially if he shows up and improves and impresses against Foreman.Comment

It isn't about him loving to chase fighters, it's about the gears martinez, the angles he sets, and the fact that he has no problem standing his ground if need be (see williams).
He's not JUST a mover, he can pull stops if he has to. Not to mention some of cottos very best weapons martinez counters better than I've seen in recent memory.
Cottos jab for example, the same jab that got him killed against pacman because manny would lead hook over it. Well, martinez (the smaller man) was right jabbing OVER the bigger Pavliks jab on saturday. He counters jabs very well.
He also brings a left over right hands exceptionally well too. Although cotto loves chasing runners, he also loves to set himself each time before throwing. He walks you down, stops, squats, buts his hands up, throws. Then he usually admires his work by walking around the ring after the combination or doing a small bounce before resetting all over again.
One thing that Martinez does NOT have in common with movers like Paulie(no power), Judah (heart issues), Quintana (frail, but closest to martinez style), is that he doesn't actually have to be set to throw.
Cotto would chase these guys down and they BOTH would have to get set to throw, fair game. But like Pacman, martinez doesn't need to set himself.. he can just throw.. so cotto usually ends up getting hit while trying to get himself in position, because martinez also doesn't wait often.. he has no problem getting off first.Comment

Again my counter...while he bears similarities to Pacquiao in terms of angles, southpaw and like you pointed out(great observation), he doesn't need to be set to throw.
But if you remember the Pacquaio fight.....Cotto wasn't having all that much trouble until Pacquiao started really opening up with those ridiculous combinations. Martinez does not throw combinations like that, and while awkward, because of his significantly lower workrate, he is much easier to get a beat on.
The size issue isn't as much of a problem as the reach problem is, but I Martinez jumps in and I think Cotto can catch him coming in.
Again...I think Martinez would win. But Cotto has a significantly better chance against Martinez than the rest of the monsters at 154-160 based on styles IMO.
Martinez doesn't throw combinations like that.Comment

Just to clarify for ******s...CAN as in is capable of...not I think he WOULD beat him.
If Cotto beats Foreman impressively, at this stage in his career, why not try and grab the lineal Middleweight crown?
Before I get called a "stan"....although I'd be surprised if I was as most know me...I think Cotto gets absolutely mauled by pretty much all of the top guys at 154-160.....PWill, Pavlik, Angulo, Kirkland...those guys all brutally stop Cotto.
Martinez's style is one that gives Cotto a chance. He's bigger but he doesn't use his size...he's not a volume puncher or that big of a puncher.
Cotto has trouble with big pressure fighters and/or fighters who throw a lot.
Now before people make the Pacquiao comparison....Martinez is not as fast(his hand speed is SEVERELY overrated) and he doesn't throw 5 and 6 punch combinations like Pacquiao.
Martinez is also nowhere near as slick as people make him out to be. Freaking Kelly Pavlik landed 45% of his power punches on him. Cotto is more accurate than Pavlik and Williams.
I'm not saying Cotto would beat Martinez. If I had to pick, even if Cotto carries 154 well, I'd still probably pick Martinez.
But it's a winnable fight, and if Cotto won it'd be an ideal way to go out for him.Comment

Just like you had Martinez getting brutalized by Pavlik??? lol just poking fun homie..
I think Cotto would have to prove his mettle at 154 against Foreman. IMO I think Cotto wins a UD against Foreman; Martinez vs Cotto at 154??? That would be intriguing! I think Martinez would fight a Martinez fight...IMO Cotto is more effective with cutting the ring off...Cotto also has experience with "boxers". I see size being the factor here...Martinez is the bigger fighter...i believe it would be a Martinez win, but I think it would go the distance...with a Split-decision.
On the other hand...COTTO has the tools and the corner to possibly handle Martinez...Either way it would be entertaining!
