Comments Thread For: Paul Williams' Trainer: Pavlik Has To Move Up, Forget 160

In the opinion of George Peterson, trainer/manager of Paul Williams, former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik needs to leave the middleweight division behind, and immediately move up to 168-pounds. On Saturday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Sergio Martinez won a marvelous twelve round decision over Pavlik to capture the WBO/WBC middleweight titles. According to several sources, Pavlik struggled more than usual to make the weight. He weighed in at 159.5 on Friday, but weighed nearly twenty pounds more, at 178-pounds, by fight time. I thought Pavlik didn't do so bad, I thought he landed some good punches for the most part against Martinez.

Peterson knows Pavlik has a rematch clause and that Martinez is Williams' most lucrative and preferred option.

He would love Pavlik to move up, so Paul can go directly to Martinez after Cintron, instead of having to look for an opponent afterward.

I would rather see Martinez-Williams II, instead of a Pavlik rematch though. Move your ass up Kelly.

He can't compete with the fighters in the SMW division.

^ if that's so regarding 168 then is Pavlik really better off rematching Martinez at Middle?

To be honest,it is no surprise that Paul Williams team is saying for him to move up to a different weight class. They know if Kelly gets out of the MW division, there will be no debates on who fights for the belts that Martinez now holds.
Pavlik figured out Martinez until his 2nd cut, then he was screwed.I knew Martinez would be a tough fight for him-he should have tried to get someone else-I believe Paul Williams is an easier fight for Kelly, because he will stand in front of Pavlik and trade...
