Do You Think Old School Fighters Get Overrated?

That's a weak answer. If we put a prime Owens in with today's Bolt, he would be smoked regardless. I'm not saying atg's in the 90's, 80's, 70's, couldn't compete today. But if you transported Johnson, Dempsey, and Langford to even today's weak HW division, you would be in for a terrible surprise. If it wasn't for scientifically measured times, I'm sure that Owens would be faster than Bolt, and Phelps would only be half as fast as Spitz.Comment

First off, why can't we spell spikes without altering it? Is that a bad word?
I may have exaggerated a bit saying no ****es and canvas sneakers. But I think you agree they are a far cry from todays foot wear, and he still had to run on dirt tracks which would make a mans sprint times much, much slower.Comment

I guess the cat is out of the bag now. I knew everybody knew who it was except burner. He was the last one to figure out it was me.....
& he had the nerve to make a thread bragging about how he was the last one to figure out it was me.
LOL.

Have a look at them
Fighters are not in better shape today, and many skills have been lost over the years such as feinting a fighter out of position and parrying punches. Heavyweights shouldn't even be called fighters compared to the greats of the past. Most are fat, slow, no endurance, hardly throw punches and rely on their size instead of actual skill. THAT IS A FACT.
does their bodies tell you anything about training and diet , fighters have more movement than they ever had , and across the board they punch harder , across the board they are faster , it really amazes me that you feel that boxing is the only sport on earth that has not improved , thats bazaar .

Not a fan, but I agree. Take a average 50's or 60's basketball team and put them against an average modern team... well I don't even have to say it really.Comment

Yes they do get over rated sometimes but thats not to say they are legends!!! You have to love the heart of the old skool boxer who took on anyone and everyone in his way!!!
As for todays fighters its like every sport things just get faster stronger better as time goes by but nobody notices because everyone is at that level!!!
But every era will have a few guys who stand out from their pairs which is what makes a legend!!!Comment

Good points, and also consider that Leonard in his comeback was a very small welterweight and not nearly as good as he had been as a lightweight. Perhaps Arcel wasn't really into boxing during Leonard's heyday, since it was likely about 10 years before his comeback. Why is it newspaper accounts of the day, not nostalgia, describe him as a fast, slashing fighter fighter who had excellent lateral movement and got in and out in a flash while throwing his punches? That is a far cry from what you've described my friend. Ray Arcel trained Benny Leonard for his comeback and also trained Duran for much of his career. Duran was like a son to him yet he declined to pick which of the two was the greater fighter. If we can't go on the word of an expert like Arcel we're not being very objective.
Nat Fleischer, who saw annd reported on every fighter from Jim Jeffries in 1903, to George Foreman, always maintained that Jack Johnson was the superior of Any heavyweight. "Chappie" Blackburn, Joe Louis' trainer and mentor, always said the very same thing, and that Johnson would beat Louis "very badly......."Comment

Its your privilege to voice your opinion here. But try doing it with facts and logic to back it up. So far you have provided none. Records are made to be broken. That doesn't mean athletes as a whole are better now than than. Pick a sport and I'll be happy to back this statement up.Comment
