We can debate all day about it, and people will come up with reasons why they think Jones did the right thing by not fighting him, the main one being that Calzaghe wasn't a big name, but whatever the reason it's still not really fair how Joe is criticized for apparently not wanting to fight Jones. It's bull****. Joe wanted the fight. Again, I posted ****loads of articles from the UK press from around the time this was all going on.
    oh no you didn't

I really cant see how people can say Roy wouldnt fight Joe because he wasnt a big name..I mean some of the guys on Roys resume make you say 'who?'

Yeah and people also gotta realise that Joe himself wasnt a prime beast when he faced Hopkins,Both guys were past their best..Joes hands were like glass the last few fights

        Business wise?

        Yes.

Hopkins position was still tentative around 2002. He had one MONSTER win but a loss would have blown bloom off the rose right then. It's the same reason he demanded an unreasonable 50-50 with Roy. He made significantly more in the long haul by not taking fights where he could get beat then and kept more by waiting out King.

Not defending it or saying I liked it at the time. I would have loved to see Hopkins-Simon before Harry's accident. He was the only Middleweight in the early 2000s who could really have pushed Hopkins.

Yeah I see what you are saying.
Im mainly aiming it at people who say Joe would have been murdered by a younger version of Hopkins..to those people this $3m would have been an easy payday.
Me personally its a pick em fight no matter when they fight.Joes workrate would always cause Hopkins problems IMO.

I agree. They were both among the world's best when they faced off and Joe won fairly clearly IMO. He was better in 2002 and so was Hopkins and Joe's chin was better when he was younger as well. He was always a sucker for the right but he didn't start dropping until past the age of 30 as he struggled to stay at 68 and his legs got stronger as fights went on even then.

They were both great fighters, Hopkins might still be, and would never have been anything but a long night for each other.

Because Calzaghe would've pulled out of the fight with a hand injury like he did with Glen Johnson probably and Hopkins wanted to fight Oscar De La Hoya. My two cents.

These negotiations were in 2002...the fight was meant to happen in 2002.
He didnt fight Oscar until 2004.
This was also 2 years before Joe Calzaghe pulled out of the fight with Glen Johnson.

Calzaghe did that same **** before though, of jerking people around with finger nail injuries. Why do you Calzaghe fanatics blame other people for his weak legacy?

When did he do it before?

Jay Larkin isnt a Calzaghe fanatic either,he just called it how it was.
Hopkins turned down $3m to face Calzaghe in order to face Hakkar for $200k.
