Calzaghe really wasn't even known until he beat Lacy...

Calzaghe was all risk and little reward at that point.

Hopkins was far smarter waiting till later on when Calzaghe was actually recognized by the boxing world and had some good names in his resume.

People keep mentioning how Hopkins opted to fight Hakkar instead but the reality is that was his mandatory ( a pathetic one but not Hopkins fault). It Hopkins didn't fight him, he would of lost his title(s).
i would have liked to see morade hakkar's middleweight reign of terror. he probably would have had 21 easy defenses and became an all time great. maybe he could even get a controversial decision over a 45 year old legend and beat up a totally shot legend for icing on the cake.

None of these guys were exactly world famous when Hopkins fought them either

Look who Hopkins fought after he KO'd green Joe Lipsey in March 1996.
          1. Bo James - a virtual scrub and not a contender. July, 1996
          2. John David Jackson - washed up and coming off a loss to a 9-6 fighter. Why did that merit a title shot? April 1997
          3. Glen Johnson- unproven, untested and green. July, 1997
          4. Andrew Council - a faded Jr. middleweight. November, 1997
          5. Simon Brown - a very faded former welterweight champ. January, 1998
          6. Robert Allen I - he hadn't done **** since losing to Barboza. Why did he get a shot? August, 1998

Same resume as Ottke? Really? They're only comparable if you read some names on the record and don't watch the fights. You're always amusing though.
