A gay guy doing gay things in the gym would in no way be tolerated, but his presence would not be a problem. I have no problem with gay people and the things that they do. I dont understand it and dont want what they do around me but in their private lives it their business.
To bring public the fact that a fighter is gay, in my opinion, would cause irreversable damage that will follow him through his entire career. It would probably haunt him in his retirement aswell, with the nasty nature of the common person walking this earth.
Its about money, not coming forward with being gay. Because if the public will not pay to see you fight, then you will not.

(You would be surprised of some of the fighters in the pas that were actually gay)
I've noticed on some other boxing forums out there you could talk about, there's a lot of ****phobia used in "smack talk". Even Hasim Rahman wasn't averse to using "gay" as a put-down (I take it you saw his studio bust-up with Lennox, right?)
Thankfully this forum has to be the most intelligent and reasoned boxing forum I've ever come across. Sure, I had a moan about the "leech" thing, but here people really wanna talk - and talk properly - about boxing.
But the question remains... why are there no gay boxers? Or known gay boxers? And if they were, what sort of reception would they get? And just why did Lennox get all those rumours?
Well, for what it's worth, Im bisexual ,and I used to do a little amateur kickboxing when I was younger. As far as whether or not it affected my ability to fight, i.e. take a punch or dish one out, absolutely not. In fact, I work as a bouncer in a sports bar now, and I have no problem tossing people out.
Sexuality is very private. But in regards to sports and what not, it is insignificant as far as Im concerned.

A suspected gay guy would be fine....but one who was open about it.....I think he'd be met with a lot of disdain.
Boxing trainers & fighters are usually the most down-to-earth people. But, it is a macho world, & I wonder how it would be viewed.
Who cares if they are or not. As long as they can fight and don't tell us about it. Trust me there are some there. I live in the D.C.. area and many a person here have said that Demarcus Corley is bi-sexual. He works at a fire station in the city and many a people in the neighborhood have said that he is a sugar cone. What macho and straight man do you know that would wear a damn pair of half shorts-half dress to the ring, that exposes him the way he does? Besides that I attended one of the larger universities on the east coast and half of the guys on the footbal team were 50/50. They didnt broadcast it but their were definitely rumors and some forms of evidence circulating around many of them.

That's a very open and honest admission to make on a forum of this nature. I applaud you for it.
Being openly gay in boxing would not affect your ability to fight but it would certainly affect your ability to be paid for fighting.

Well, at the time, I was fighting in the amateur ranks. We didnt get paid anyway. Funny thing is, I fought for three years and during the whole time, I went undefeated (11-0), and I was in a four year relationship with a man. Go figure.

Thank you anorak, have some Karma. But let me make one thing clear. I didnt "come out" to draw attention to myself and my sexuality, but to instead, make a point that I feel needed to be made. That being that most people have a HUGE misconception about gays and their behaviours and lifestyles. Trust me. You can't tell by looking. Im 6'6" and 335lbs. I look like a biker, and no one, and I mean NO ONE, has ever been able to "read me" unless I want them too.
If a fight breaks out, I'll have no problem busting your skull. Cause its not about male/female. Its about honesty and integrity and not lying to yourself.
I dont think every gay person should feel that they MUST come out of the closet to everyone, but to live in denial is the worst thing you could do to yourself. Life is way too ****ing short to give a **** about what a bunch of narrow minded asshats think.
