Why Exactly Is James Toney So Revered?

Co-sign.He hasnt fought bums ... if u compare james toney to roy jones's record he ****s all over rjj , he's not a ***** , he'll fight anyone , the fact that he's gone from middleweight all the way to heavyweight and been champion in every weight class, and he's 5'8 1/2 and ****in with the big boys ... yeah i know what your saying about his skills and that , maybe if he didnt go to burger king so much he would be so much better , but the fact that he can be fat and overweight and still school 99% of the boxers out there speaks for itself ... And he's funny as **** lol
Man you remind me that Burger King **** on that interview that was f****ng funny.Comment

Cuando:
-he is fat (presently)
-he is disrespectful
-he is lazy (always)
-tested positive for steroids
-he loses/draws to bums
-he lost almost all of his big name fights
-his record is filled with wins against BUMS and/or unheard of people
-his only notable big wins are against Jirov and an OLD SHOT holyfield
-has victories against people he shouldn't (boxing politics)
-his skills are undeniable yet he didn't achieve what has expected of him (because of his high skill set)
i don't hate james toney, i think he has good skills but i thin he is WAY OVERRATED (based on accomplishments and skills)..........and i wonder exactly why is the man so loved, and gets so little hate (compared to someone like roy jones jr., who defeated him rather easily might i add)
It is clear to me you just started watching boxing (so are probably a Pac fan) and you really have no idea what James Toney was @ 160 and 168.
James Toney is a throwback fighter.....a boxing genius from Michigan (where most other boxing savant's are born).
He beat guys like:
- Michael Nunn (the best middleweight at the time with a record of 36-0-0 and was infact a very very good fighter. They used to call him a middleweight Ali southpaw...he was also a big MW)
- Reggie Johnson
- Mike McCallum (several times)
- Iran Barkley (the biggest 168 pounder u will see. JT gives a clinic on angles + slipping and countering in the pocket. He savages Barkley)
- Tim Littles
- Charles Williams
-RJJ (even though he lost)
- Montell Griffin (robbed in the second fight)
The list goes on. Would have beat Terrible "Terry Norris" aswell if he could have kept making weight.
You are talking about a guy with 80 odd fights who started as a MW and is now fighting HW's and winning belts (only 2 others have done that....RJJ and Fitzsimmons). To top it off no one has KO'd him. All the way from 160 to heavyweight and a fat 270 pound plus ogre like Sam Peter can't knock him out.
Do us all a favour and STFU.....u understand nothing about boxing or James Toney......crawl back into whichever hole u came out of!!!Comment

...........Cuando:
-he is fat (presently)
So? Duran ended his career looking pretty portly too
-he is disrespectful
so? so was Ali, Floyd etc It's boxing, not a sewing class
-he is lazy (always)
when toney got going, he was a reasonably fit fighter
-tested positive for steroids
towards the tail end of his career, and for an injury
-he loses/draws to bums
he lost to Thadzi and had a draw vs Williams, but he was under motivated for both
-he lost almost all of his big name fights
Really? Nunn, Jirov, McCallum, Barkley were not big fights?
-his record is filled with wins against BUMS and/or unheard of people
See above
-his only notable big wins are against Jirov and an OLD SHOT holyfield
see above again
-has victories against people he shouldn't (boxing politics)
one over tiberi, i can name dizens of other good fighters who got lucky D's too
-his skills are undeniable yet he didn't achieve what has expected of him (because of his high skill set)

I was actually having the same conversation with Warp tonight.
He's revered a hell of a lot more than he should be.
He has a ton of draws, splits, robberies and come from behind KOs when he was dead in the water on points in his 44-0-2 run.
His best win was against Michael Nunn, when he was dead on points, and needed a KO to pull it out. It's impressive that he did, but being that far behind on points says something about his ability. This isn't to say that Nunn is a bad fighter, but... people act like prime Toney is god.
The Barkley performance was really impressive, but it's a one dimensional fighter that he schooled.
The draw and close win over McCallum are both very disputed.
He just had too many close calls to be the second coming of god that people make him out to be.
I will say that it's damn impressive that he beat Jirov after he was close to shot, and then beating Ruiz when he was shot and on steroids is also pretty impressive to me.
But the TS is correct that he is overrated skill wise.Comment

Solid response.
The guy who is supposedly one of the best defensive counterpunchers ever got his ass beat by Michael Nunn, who threw a thousand punches, meaning he had a thousand counter opportunities.
Thank god he was able to pull one lights out punch out of his ass to win it.
But seriously, coming from behind and having to pray the KO comes is what I call true skill.Comment
