Trinidad ruined him... Trinidad softened up Vargas chin.... If you look before Vargas fought Trinidad. He fought fighters like Campas, Quartey, Raul Marquez, Winky Wright, Thompson... And, he never got dropped... And, then after the Tito beating in his very next fight he got droped by Rivera who was not a heavy puncher... He really was not the same since tito.. Tito ruined him.

I'd blame his management before anything else. I think it was a huge mistake to put him in there against a prime Tito. Vargas was like 22 years old and Tito was around 27. But then again there was no grantee he would be better than Tito or Oscar in his prime, so its hard to say if he was really ruined.

                The steroids ruined him.

Gave him a false sense of security.

i remember talking to vargas on ustream, and he said he never drank in his early 20's but in his mid to late 20's his "friend" got him into drinking and thats where all the weight came from. so my opinion is tito and de la hoya didnt ruin his career, his bad habbits outside the ring did.
