I'm pretty sure Titi hurt his pride and his body as well.

Trinidad fought an inexperienced kid and went through life and death with him before picking up one of the most impressive wins of his career.Had Vargas had two more or three more years of ring experience, then he would have beaten Trinidad,De La Hoya and any other fighter at 154.

Trinidad vs Vargas was one of the most exciting fights of the decade.....DLH-Vargas doesn't compare.
Agreed, you had all the criteria for a big fight:
      Undefeated fighters
      Young fighters
      PR-Mexican rivalry
      Power punchers
      Champions
      Very prideful of their heritage
      Dislike for one another
      6 knockdowns in the fight
      Several low blows
      A dramatic ending
      2 Point penalties

      THAT...was...a...fight.

I voted Tito, but I can see the argument for Hoya.

Vargas showed some courage, and went out on his shield against Tito. I think he could walk away from that fight and feel like like he went out like a true Mexican warrior.

When Hoya took him out though, I could see that having a bigger mental impact on him, as low as he thought of Hoya.

In other words, I'd attribute the physical damage to Tito, but I could see the loss to De La Hoya being more damaging to his mindset.

I'd still say Tito though, I'd say that first round beating alone shattered Vargas.

Fighters with a mouth are what make our sport so fun. It makes a big fight into a mega fight.

And honestly, Boxing is the only sport where no one cares about political correctness.

Tito may have softened up Vargas but DLH did more to "ruin" FV than Tito IMHO. If FV was "ruined" from the Tito fight he wouldn't have been as competitive as he was fighting DLH 2 years and wins later...
