Not for the Calzaghe fight. Emmanuel stewart talks about it in round 4. He also commented on how much stronger and bigger he looked against Calzaghe whose unofficial weight was 181 lbs.
For the Pavlik fight, Jack Loew claims that Hopkins rehydrated back up to 187 lbs.

    • The Ring has always been in love with Hopkins, so it doesn't surprise me to see them blindly giving him the benefit of the doubt in ranking him as high as they do these days, even though it's literally been years since he's last faced a fighter in his weight class.

The rest of the thread makes for good comedy. It's also revealed that an overwhelming majority of boxing fans today never saw Hopkins fight in his prime.

      • Hop is genius, but yea he is a tad overrated these days. Too many of his fans think he beats everyone who ever lived because of his guile and intelligence. It's really annoying. It's hard to beat him convincingly because of his style and tactics. He's really negative. Not my favorite guy. I respect the hell out of him, though.

He was going to fight the winner...it was a tourney.
my point is, he hung around at 160 because tito, who brought the $, was moving up...

my other point is, hopkins never mentioned joppy until after tito floored him...

bull-friggin'-****. Hopkins was without a doubt THE most avoided middleweight of his time. King had control over seemingly every other middleweight and refused to allow his best (Joppy and Holmes among others) anywhere near Hopkins until he was able to get paper on him.

The Middleweight tournament happened only because Hopkins agreed to sign with King. If not, Tito's MW run and beyond would've went something like this:
            - Joppy
            - tuneup
            - catchweight bout with Jones

i have to admit...every time i turned on the television in the 90's and saw that hopkins was fighting on espn to a capacity crowd of 30 people at the blue horizon, against another weak middleweight like bo james, when he could have been challenging himself against some stiffer comp at 168 like michael nunn, it never dawned on me that this cat would have so many excuse makers in his corner in 2009...

He had already made 12 defenses of his title when Tito moved up. How could he have known so many years ahead?

Also, Hopkins called out Joppy and Holmes plenty of times. Plenty.

Jake, you keep a much cooler head than me - if you plan on debating Hopkins with this guy you're head's gonna explode.

he was avoided at middleweight....lol....because everybody down there knew he was sweating himself down from 175....he was 15x stronger than anybody in the division...i don't blame them for trying to shut nard out...i doubt if anybody at 168 or 175 was that frightened of him...hell ask calzaghe how scared he was of nard at 168 in 2001...he had a signed fight with him that disappeared...ask jones how scared he was of nard at 175...
