He was one of my favorite fighters. He would sit in the pocket, not get hit and counter. On top of that he had a granite chin and good power. His fight against Jirov is the clear example when he was disciplined.

I am a big fan of James toney when he is focus and determined. Yes he failed a few test but he is an all time great regardless.

He's under appreciated. I think because he was over shadowed by the bigger names in the 90s.

Casual fans probably will never give him credit but him and Nunn were impressive at their peak.

I wouldnt have given him much of a chance vs Mike, because I dont think he had the kind of power at heavy that he would have needed to keep Mike off of him. And the fact that he has a cement beard, means he would have taken TREMENDOUS punishment in that fight, until the ref eventually stops it...............

Could the James Toney in 2003 that beaten Evander Holyfield & Vassiliy Jirov beat the Mike Tyson in 2002 that lost to Lennox Lewis and beat Clifford Etienne in 2003 ? Yes I do think that James Toney (could) have beaten that Mike tyson but that doesnt say much.

Do I think the James Toney that beat Iran in 1993 at Super middleweight beats pre Buster Douglas, Mike Tyson? Heck no lol.

James Toney had way more fights at heavyweight then Roy even though Roy grabbed a weak belt at heavyweight and Toney tested postive and lost his claim.

Tony at heavy was past his prime and underpowered

He was quicker than most heavies in his old age but he wasn't quicker than prime Tyson

If he has big power maybe he would have a chance but Tyson. Is going to batter him and just eat any counters tony gets in as Tyson had a good chin and heavy tony dint hit hard enough

Don't forget how quick Tyson's footwork was and how he likes to get off angle. Toney is going to want to keep his bladed stance but tyson is going to be looking to come off angle. I think Tyson would land big on him

Has anybody ever seen the real James Toney? I mean the guy behind this act, because clearly the ****y narcissist that he's been playing his whole career can't be the real man behind the gimmick.

You're probably right. Although with Roy Jones he has calmed down over the years and you can certainly see the real guy(and he seems like a decent person).

I'm amazed Toney can still keep this gimmick up into middle age. I still haven't seen him crack and show his real self.
