Lol Canelo is clearly the favorite, but from Serrano to Verdejo, one thing we can say about the Puerto Rican fan base is that they come out in droves to support their own. You see the flags, the parades, etc. It's what allows a mediocre fighter like Berlanga to bring something to the table, to help boost ppv sales amidst this streaming generation and that UFC event. It's literally the only reason Danny irrelevant Garcia was thrown on the card.

When you're looking at retirement, you're constantly thinking about life after boxing and what kind of nest egg you want to be sitting on. Usyk, Lomachenko, Crawford, and all those mid-late 30s legends are thinking the same way. I don't hold it against them one bit for all the punches they've taken for us over the years.

My theory is that Canelo has been trying to force the toughest contenders to remove each other from the equation, so that he only has to deal with the last man standing. However, his strategy isn't working because guys like Benavidez/Mbilli/Morrell are simply not fighting each other. Team Benavidez (Sampson iirc) used the excuse that Benavidez/Morrell needed to be marinated until it was a unification...and that Canelo is to blame because he holds all of the 168lb titles. Personally, I think he's just trying to put all the responsibility on Canelo, but we're going to see what happens now that Benavidez and Morrell are both at 175lb. Since Benavidez is still within Canelo's sphere of influence, I expect Team DB to continue being careful with their matchmaking.

That's interesting. I would even add that it resembles the Mayweather model of having someone close to your age have an excellent and parallel career to yours so that you can spend the whole duration of your careers avoiding each other yet building up the fight to save for when you're ready to cash out.

Mayweather had Pacquiao, Benavidez has Morrell, Shakur has Haney(?), Joshua had Wilder, and so on.

Well, canelo has the responsibility to defend the belts against the best available opponents, not fishing one out the trash. Morrell Jr was mandatory for three years and was the only 168 pounder that welcomed any fight, regardless of their level of danger. Actually he wanted to fight benavidez real bad, he didn't care about canel because he said, and I quote, canelo wouldn't fight me, ever. So my take is that canelo is holding the belts hostage, he's fighting berlanga that should tell you where he is at, change berlanga (he took DMJ place)for Morrell Jr and he will run for his life. It's all ginger's fault, you can use strategies when you in the ring not to avoid the rightfully players in your own division. You can't call yourself a king when you haven't beat the warlords asking for your head.

Canelo is the undisputed champion, 6th in the 4-belt era and 1st in Mexico, beaten and taken the 0s of future HOFers, has the best resume in boxing (alongside Usyk), and at one point was considered the best p4p boxer on the planet.

Not fighting Benavidez, whose about to get exposed at 175, won't hurt his legacy any more than beating him would help it.

i think fighting and beating benny now would be fantastic for canelos legacy, its what u are supposed to do, take on the toughest challenge when that challenge is going well and a bit of a bogeyman, fans love that its great for legacy, avoid it & its the complete opposite, most fans wont forget that one ever, this is even more relevant if you are one of the top p4p guys where more is expected of them

You know, ever since Gavril 1, I've never really rated Benavidez that high. Like, what if Canelo, a master counter puncher, caught him with that same hook that knocked him down and almost out if there was more time left in the fight? I think Benavidez is just one of the last ones left in a now dead division

Ideally, yes, the best fight the best available, but I just don't think he's good enough to be considered a full fledge duck, so much as Canelo's trying not to burn out after 60+ fights unless it's really worth it
