Honest question. What is it about Canelo that makes him so popular?

    You missed a couple:
All those dudes won legitimate world titles at some point in their careers. He also fought contenders like:
Austin Trout (Trout was the champ, not a contender, and I think he beat Canelo in a close fight)
John Ryder (old, domestic level fighter)

To me, Canelo's only impressive wins are:
2nd GGG fight (though, that could have gone either way - but it was a really good performance)
    Callum Smith
    Billy Joe Saunders
    Caleb Plant

With all the rest, you have to add an asterisk, like you did, Elastic Recoilz (old/past prime opponent, rehydration clauses, weight bullying, corrupt judging).

Canelo is a very good fighter, but not great. If you're great you don't need to stack the scales to win. What would his win-loss record be had he not stacked the scales?

He made himself active consistently. Question is why do the others can't at least duplicate his activity rate and don't have to beg for his attention?

Three fights a year is ideal, but most can now only do one fight a year let alone three. Why can't they at least try to become Canelo on this regard, instead of crying why he won't fight them? In other words, why not try to make it on their own? People are sick of this waiting around BS and fans want to see these clowns fight each other.

because he was a mexican at the right time. boxing establishment needed a new star when mayweather and pacman were done or close to retirement. people flock to stars so they proclaim who's the next one. it had to be mexican or american because otherwise people who waste the most money in the world wouldn't care. make no mistake, if canelo was from madagascar, bulgaria or uzbekistan, he wouldn't be a star. he wouldn't get many meaningful fights and money.

because "boxing" fans are pretty dumb and don't love boxing. when there are good, evenly matched fights between young or prime not well known fighters, nobody watches even for free. when there is a circus show millions pay to watch. so we have fans of names and not fans of boxing.

canelo's resume is great and i respected him as a fighter even when he was a 1 division champion. he is not active enough in the ring and his fights aren't exciting to me because of that. it's the one reason i'm not his fan. obviously he fights to win, not to satisfy me . i prefer fighters like roman gonzalez and bam rodriguez. bam should earn more than canelo based on boxing alone but "fans" don't pay for that.

I think it is because he filled the gap when guys like Morales, Barrera and Marquez got old and retired.

But he was also matched up well, marketed well and he fought often

I wish fighters were more active too but Canelo is able to fight more often because he can make whatever fight he wants, whenever he wants. The organizations are behind him as well, so they're able to mandate, or move guys around in rankings, even if they're not necessarily worthy. Unfortunately guys aren't going to risk losing the Canelo sweepstakes if they feel there's any chance to get a fight with him. Still though, guys should be more active regardless.

You can't reach that stage without the corresponding hard work. That's like saying you got promoted because you're a relative of someone in high places. A cart can't be put ahead of the horse.

canelo over the years has been a good strong fighter, hes not an easy guy to beat

hes had the benefit of the judging system with his close fights & has the ability to rehydrate after weight in to fight night which helps him in the ring, i still dont understand how they cant limit this to fully respect one of the cores of boxing, fighting guys close to your own weight

Don`t fool yourselves, if he was German, Russian, Ukrainian...nobody would care to bring on all these old past prime Mosleys for him.

But I must also give Canelo some credit, he took some risks when he didn`t have to, for example fighting Mayweather, Lara, Trout, Bivol.

And he moved up in weight, not only once.

All together, here is your answer.
He did have to take some risks to validate his popularity. The results are the ones we quetioning.

He's had favoritism for years. You honestly believe there's no such thing as nepotism? There's plenty of people that have been promoted or been put in positions just because of who they are and who they know.

Trout had the WBA Regular belt. He never won a legitimate world title.
