Saying boxing is big all over the world is a pigment of some people's imagination; people who rarely mingle with other people and their cultures. Of course, if you only read western newspapers, and only focused on your own media you're limited to western values and cultures, thus Ali being mentioned and other celebrities would not be uncommon.Comment

How many participate in Soccer compared to boxing, why do fans expect boxing to be mainstream alongside football etc, its never been any different its a niche sport with its very own deep history and its the only niche sport that can stop the world for an hour while its best earn the largest purses in all sport, its not for everyone but its superstars are known by everyone.Comment

Wasn't alive during that time but Ali's counterpart is pele and he isnt nearly as popular is/was even to this day. **** even my grandma who was born in the middle of a war in a country that has no pro boxing history, had no access to TV till like the 2000s knew muhammad ali as a boxer.
My mom heard of the rumble in the jungle even though it happened two years after she was born.
Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson may be the most popular athletes ever.Comment

I think its because boxing is very individual star driven. Major team sports are vastly bigger in most respects but they're not so much about the individual athletes, its as much (or more) about the team and the competition as about the players.

Hulk Hogan for example is probably more recognisable than the vast majority of soccer players, but pro wrestling sure as **** isnt bigger than soccer. Tiger Woods is very recogisable too but it doesnt mean tons of people are watching golf religiously.Comment

I bet she's heard of the Brazil national soccer team. Soccer is a team sport.

There is still something incredible about the Heavyweight Championship of the World. The greatest individual status in world sport.
Doesn't compare to the World Cup in popularity though.Comment
