Roy Jones was great but that division was trash when he was in his prime.

Prime Roy was a freak of nature. Like the Michael Jordan of boxing.. too athletic and too much power and speed in his prime for Beterbiev.

I used to think nobody would beat Roy Jones Jr in his prime, but he never fought Nigel Benn, and he never fought Calzaghe in his prime....nor did he give Hopkins a rematch while he was in his prime (he waited until he was a shell of himself and struggling financially).

Keep reminding people of this fact. Roy was fighting part-time boxers.

I watched Jones back in his prime. I remember you marked your calendar for that date to see if someone would beat him and it never happened. Had he not got DQ'd and retired after beating Ruiz, be would have been top 3 all time IMO. You can say what you want about the competition, but you can also say that about Wlad, Fury and quite a few others.

Although I do agree RJJ is the ultimate boxing p4p specimen of all time. Him vs a prime Ward is debatable on who actually wins I feel. Sorta like Hagler vs Hopkins or Floyd vs Bud.

Wrong! I followed the situation VERY closely over the years, every article, every interview!

                Facts:

                1. Murad Muhammad went to Germany to negotiate a fight in Germany between the two and DM's promoter and Universum head Klaus Peter Kohl wanted to pay DM double what they were offering Jones. Jones was being offered the usual 5Mill he normally makes, DM was to get either 8Mill or 10Mill. Getting that much less when you are the PFP #1 fighter is absurd.

                2. DM was scheduled to fight Telesco on ESPN to build his brand in the US and boxing writer Marty Mulcahy even showed the scheduling of the fight on his fight schedule on fight news dot com. DM pulled out because there was not enough money. This was during the time when Telesco was on a major roll.

                3. DM was offered a co main event on HBO but declined due to the money for a fight that would have built up the Jones fight. He wasn't interested.

                4. Klaus Peter Kohl was often unavailable for phone calls from team jones, this fact was documented through research by fight news dot com.

                An article:

                5. In 2001, Roy's advisor Brad Jacobs, met with Kerry Davis VP for HBO, and they tried desperately to make the fight.

                6. Peter Kohl who was DM's advisor was never available to sit down and discuss terms. He was also never available via phone, and he wouldn't even name a figure to get the ball rolling.

                7. HBO also proposed the idea of a double header to hype the fight. A lot of U.S. fans had hardly seen DM fight, so HBO wanted to put both fighters on the same bill, to stir interest in a fight.

This was turned down by Kohl.

If DM and Kohl had been serious about a fight, they never would have turned down that opportunity.

                8. Murad Muhammad gave an interview in 2003, and he said that DM was asking for a $6M purse, and he was making between $1-1.5M per fight in Germany.

According to a recent interview with Roy, HBO actually offered DM $5M, and he turned it down.

All you have to do, is go and look at DM's resume, to see how serious he was about fighting the likes of Roy, Tarver and Harding etc. He never left his comfort zone in Germany to fight the #1 PFP fighter. He was happy defending his WBO belt for decent money against C class fighters, some of which had already been beaten easily by Roy.

If DM and Kohl had wanted Roy bad enough, they'd have agreed to the HBO double header, which was a great idea, and then afterwards they'd have fought Roy.

They turned down the opportunity to instead fight Hall, Harmon and De Grandis.

That's how bad they wanted Roy.

                9. They turned down $5M for Roy, to fight Joey De Grandis for $1-1.5M.

Team DM was all talk. His resume tells you what his intentions were. The best fighter in the world shouldn't have had to have gone to Germany in 2001 and take less money than DM. And finally DM was beaten by a guy Jones toyed with.

Probably the most isolated period in boxing history, if you're a casual outside the States you may not be aware he even exists which you wouldn't get in any other world sport,
Nah..Beterbiev would of came to Las Vegas and he would of got hit with hooks from odd angles, take 6 lunch combinations, and get hit with counter right hands faster than what Manny and Sugar Ray Leonard are capable of.

Isn't debatable at all. Ward would try to wrestle and score on the inside but would get beato the punch and not see the shots he would take. Don't think struggles with Ward at all. 11 rounds to 1.

Beterbiev, Bivol, Ward, Canelo would have NO answers to stop Jones from being the usual ring general he was.
