Even though Spain ruled for 400 years, most Filipinos don't speak Spanish as a first language.

            Sorry but this thread Fails..
Tell National Census about this because their record is wrong... their record shows 60% Spanish last names.... and that includes Bautista, Concepcion, Peņalosa, Espinosa, Villa, Navarete, Padilla, Elorde, and even Pacquiao is a Spanish term...

Other than the religion, very little of Spanish culture remains in the Phillipines. Tagalog also borrows very little from the Spanish language, but if you put a Spanish speaker and a Tagalog speaker in a room together they won't be able to hold a conversation.
Visayas and Mindanao has bigger percentage of Spanish language compared to Tagalog.. My first language which is Hiligaynon/Ilonggo has 35% Spanish terms, especially common nouns. Tagalog is more on Indonesian and Chinese terms...

                    His·pan·ic (hĭ-spān'ĭk)
                    adj.

                    1. Of or relating to Spain or Spanish-speaking Latin America.
                    2. Of or relating to a Spanish-speaking people or culture

Where or how does the Philippines fall into that rubric? They have very little Spanish culture other than the religion and the majority speak Tagalog, not Espaņol.

If you're from Mexico and you are full Native American, like a one side of my family is, than you are correct in assuming that they are not Hispanic. However Mexico is considered a Hispanic country because the majority of the country has roots to Spain, not only through the language but also in the bloodline. Just like Puerto Rico. You are considered Taino or of African descent if you have no Spanish blood.
Lol.... Did you not read my last posts??? Or are you just selectively ignoring them???

Did I not enlighten you to the fact that up until the Philippine/American War and de facto up until the 1960's the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE was SPANISH???

Our national hero, Jose Rizal's most famous works were written in ****en SPANISH....lol... My father and millions of other students stagged protests, sitins, demonstrations, etc...and were arrested in their college days in the 60's in order to abolish SPANISH in schools and public institutions.... So please dont tell me that Philippines doesnt speak Spanish....

Like I said, by your very definition we can be desribed as "hispanic", but it is simply a slap in the face to all of those ancestors that fought to keep our own identity intact...

Really tho, you dont know what your talking about, people with indian (mexicans), taino (puerto rican) ancestry, is still considered "hispanic" as long as some Spanish cultural aspects have been embraced, ie Spanish language...

The problem you seem to have is that "hispanic" is very general and not very exclusive as to demand particular requirements such as direct descendency to the Iberian Penninsula... Current accepted definitions does not require that but merely some level of Spanish cultural crossover...

                    Comprende?

Nah, it probably more that 2%...closer to 15% in my opinion. The Spanish did much humping during those times (including friars). We have many de los reyes/ de los santos/ de la pena, etc... here. And I saw an documentary on how the Pinoys facial changes per racial mix. They correlated it well especially the Spanish mix.

As for the language, true because they took out Spanish in the curriculum decades ago. But there is still a place here (Davao or Cagayan???)that speaks Spanish (they refer to it as Chavakano--don't know the real spelling) as a first language.
