hispanic use to denote culture/language and applies to former colonies of spain.

now the census classifies it for south americans and mexico. some countries in south america don't even have spanish influence but portuguese.
I still think they strictly oppose it's status as a "race" though

Ok, as a 4 year degree holder, you should understand that the term "hispanic" does not mean your dna ties to Spain but rather, "the term is used to describe the culture and people of countries formerly ruled by Spain, usually with a majority of the population speaking the Spanish language"...

By that very definition, Filipinos, if they chose, could claim the term "hispanic"... But, as I've said, we have retained through passive and active resistance, our OWN identity...

LOL, just a note, your post is somewhat contradictory... Are you saying the measure of a country to be labbeled as "hispanic", 50% or more rate of Spanish bloodline, what about the other 40%? If you're from Puerto Rico and you are black, does that mean you are not hispanic???lol
With your double degrees I would have thought that you would actually do a bit more research into your own identity. Straight from Dictionary.com to make it plain:

        His·pan·ic (hĭ-spān'ĭk)
        adj.

        1. Of or relating to Spain or Spanish-speaking Latin America.
        2. Of or relating to a Spanish-speaking people or culture

Where or how does the Philippines fall into that rubric? They have very little Spanish culture other than the religion and the majority speak Tagalog, not Español.

If you're from Mexico and you are full Native American, like a one side of my family is, than you are correct in assuming that they are not Hispanic. However Mexico is considered a Hispanic country because the majority of the country has roots to Spain, not only through the language but also in the bloodline. Just like Puerto Rico. You are considered Taino or of African descent if you have no Spanish blood.

I agree with pink on this one, because the influence of Spain, which ruled the Philippines as a colony is evident even in the common names they share with other Spanish ruled coutnries such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc. It don't matter though, Pinoys are cool as ****. lol. I love it when they pronunce the P and F bacwards. That **** rocks...Nuff said.

The names come from the religion, not from the mixing of ethnicity.

                  yeah but it's still screwy.

i think they classify brazilians as hispanic even though they're portuguese influenced.

I'm not disagreeing with that, I'm just saying the culture has some Spain in it. Nothing more.

Only idiots do. Hispanic refers to Hispana which means "from Spain". Brazilians are Latin American or Luso which means from Portugal or of Portuguese culture and derives its origin from Lusitania, the Roman name for Portugal.
