he's not talking about taiwanese/chinese like you're thinking of.

he's talking about inhabitants of what is NOW called taiwan a long , long , long time ago.

malays and polynesians trace their roots to aborigines from taiwan.

they don't look anything like what you think of as taiwanese.

Only 3.8% of all Filipinos have any European ancestry and Spanish was only mandatory for Government positions, but most government officials were from Spain anyway. Filipinos are not at all Hispanic. They are mostly descended from Taiwanese aborigines.

Hispanic countries like Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba have at least 50% or higher rate of Spanish descendant blood lines.

Thanks for the info, I guess my double major history/poly sci and my masters in poly sci was just a waste..lol..

Ok, as a 4 year degree holder, you should understand that the term "hispanic" does not mean your dna ties to Spain but rather, "the term is used to describe the culture and people of countries formerly ruled by Spain, usually with a majority of the population speaking the Spanish language"...

By that very definition, Filipinos, if they chose, could claim the term "hispanic"... But, as I've said, we have retained through passive and active resistance, our OWN identity...

LOL, just a note, your post is somewhat contradictory... Are you saying the measure of a country to be labbeled as "hispanic", 50% or more rate of Spanish bloodline, what about the other 40%? If you're from Puerto Rico and you are black, does that mean you are not hispanic???lol

I suppose to put it more simply here's the wiki quote:

"The Taiwanese Aborigines are Austronesian peoples, with linguistic and genetic ties to other Austronesian ethnic groups, such as peoples of the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Madagascar and Oceania"

Pacquiao would obviously fall under the "mongoloid" (yeah i know it means something else now... in England anyway) umbrella, or just east Asian/oriental as we say today - although I understand there's a polynesian element in the Philippines

That is as opposed to being of Mestizo (Amerindian + Caucasian (Xanthochroi + Melanochroi mixture)) background which is what most people are really referring to when they talk about Hispanics or Latinos.

Hispanic these days just connotes someone belonging to the culture of the countries formerly occupied by Spain; not the race.

the difference between race (Mestizo) and ethnicity (Hispanic) is essentially nature vs. nurture to my understanding

the government doesn't even know. how are we?

hispanic use to denote culture/language and applies to former colonies of spain.

now the census classifies it for south americans and mexico. some countries in south america don't even have spanish influence but portuguese.
