Belts and trophies are overrated. They still award black belts to children, for crying out loud. Not saying belts and trophies are worthless, though. They do serve a purpose.
Traditional martial artists may handle themselves well against inexperienced fighters and those trained in the same art, but it all depends on the individual, the environment and surroundings, not to mention the agreed upon 'rules' of the fight, if any, that determines their success or failure.
