Joe considers him a teacher and not fighter doesn't make sense.

Joe Lewis respected Bruce enough to teach him how to improve his fighting game, but he didn't consider Bruce a fighter? I dont' get that.

I would want to learn from someone who actually knew how to fight as opposed to learning from someone who theorized about how to fight.
Much like learning more from a boxing trainer who's been in the trenches and has experienced real contact in the ring.

I don't know for certain if he did or didn't spar with Joe. But Joe benefited
from much of what he learned from Bruce. Enough to allow Joe to reach the top of the tournament circuit when he was active.

And I would venture to say that there had to be some sort of sparring between the two at some point to demonstrate and prove the effectiveness of the techniques shared.

Based on past articles and reports, Mike Stone also didn't really like Bruce.
I think their egos clashed, as it did with other individuals who didn't think much of Bruce.

A fighter by Joe Lewis's definition is a guy who steps in the ring and fights, other well trained guys. Bruce Lee never did this, so Joe does not consider him a fighter. I can put it another way, when Joe was asked to play the role of Colt in Way of the Dragon his reason for turning it down is a follows. "I am not going to agree to get beat up on film, by a 135 lb guy who has never been in the ring".

Bruce Lee understood the science of fighting, but that doesn't make him a fighter. Look at Angelo Dundee and Enzo Calzaghe, neither were boxers, but they understand the science of fighting, so they can train boxers.
Look at it this way, could Bruce Lee take a punch, fight through with an injury, cope with a tough guy who could take his best shots etc. The answer to all these is we don't know because he never but himself in that position.
If you read the Tao of Bruce Lee, you will find that while he was in Hong Kong, Bruce Lee told reporters numerous times, that he had won various fighting competitions in America.

Check out Joe Lewis's comments on Bruce Lee in the Tao of Bruce Lee, or check out any of his online interviews. He says that he never sparred with Lee and neither did Stone.

This above might come across that i'm knocking Bruce, but believe me i'm not, im a big fan of his. I just don't believe all the hype.

    • Bruce understood the science of fighting but that dont make him a fighter? Whats this mean? He understood the science, along with having the attributes he had, which Angelo and Enzo didnt have.
He was also a fighting genius, which i would also say Angelo and Enzo arent as well. Bruce beat many big names, so that does make him a fighter. Just because they werent filmed dont mean you can bury your head in the sand and quote Tao of Bruce Lee. SIlversamurai did you also read interviews with fighters who said they did spar with bruce lee and beat them? How come you read interviews with Joe Lewis saying he didnt spar with Bruce, but you havent read interview where famous fighters said bruce beat them. YOu are like Davis Miller with selective memory. Choosing to recall things that suit you, just like Davis Miller.

Joe Lewis didnt say Jack **** negative stuff about bruce when he was alive, even when bruce boasted he could beat anyone, and told Joe Lewis to his face that Bruce Lee was best. And Joe Lewis definiton of a fighter is not law. Sounds like sour g****s to me. Joe Lewis turned down the role in WOTD because Bruce lee was using it to show the superiority of the oriental martial artist. But i doubt Joe Lewis said he didnt want to get his butt by Bruce Lee on film personally.
Chuck Norris didnt want to be beaten on film until he realized it was Bruce Lee beating him. He said noone could beat him anyway.

      • All we hear about Bruce are stories, most of what we see are from films..
Take the actor tony jaa for example, google him. He looks like an amazing martial artist, but he tells u im not a martial artist im a stunt man.
With regards to the one inch punch etc look below (watch from 5mins onwards):
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdvYXIwa0Ow

Now tell me how much weight the one inch punch holds in terms of reliability???

On the other hand we have a sparring vid and a punch bag vid of him where he looks average.

He was an athlete sure i'll agree with that..The best?most near invincible?nowhere near.

By the way most people who make extraordinary claims about him usually do because they benefit by it, either by way of getting more interviews, teaching his martial art or selling their articles about their experience with Bruce Lee.

        • Have you got evidence of people saying extraordinary things about bruce because of an agenda? No you havent as i thought!
They were saying extraordinary things about bruce when he wasnt famous. Well before the mid sixties.

          • Lol dont be a hypocrite..dont ask me to provide proof when you're making statements without proof. U said he beat big names?where?when?evidence? people said great things about him?who where when? check the youtube vid, everyone thought he was extraordinary too, n then he got owned!!
Most people who are being interviewed when they are commenting on bruce are being paid for it. The more they act like he was amazing the longer bruce's name goes on, the more it goes on the more the person gets interviewed, writes articles etc..its all about money...

            • How the hell are you going to defend yourself if the guy kicks you in the bawls or breaks your leg, then punches you in the neck- boom there goes your life.

YOur words sound like someone with severe case of paranoia. He beat big names you know that, so why you asking? Bob Wall has said bruce kicked his butt, so are you not going to listen? All the great tournament fighters said bruce was amazing when they fought. So you ignore everything.
                Dont look good for you.

                • Theres no footage of fights from 500 years ago. So theres plenty more evidence for Bruce as there ever was for anyone else who was relevant in the past.
People said bruce kicked their butts. An actor afterall. So he must have kicked butts big time baby.

Soon after Bruce died, many came forward to stake their claims and to capitalize on his fame with truths and lies about him. So, anyone and everyone who was thought to have even a slightly close relationship with Bruce or his family would agree to interviews and articles as long as they were paid.

And it's true. While Bruce was alive, not very many said anything negative
about him or to his face. At least not that we know of. Many were bitter that he was getting a lot of attention in the US after he blew up in Asia.
So, as is human nature, a lot of people may not have had good things to say about him.

Many, back in those days, may or may not have been inclined to admit Bruce kicked their butts in private, especially when they were viewed as
top fighters in the martial arts community, and who likely ran a school or schools as their only means of income.
