Comments Thread For: Gennadiy Golovkin To Relinquish IBF Middleweight Title; Esquiva Falcao First In Line For Vacant Belt

I've followed GGG's career since the days when he was knocking out anybody he fought, and none of the big names would dare get in the ring with him because his heavy hands were breaking orbital bones and ribs. He was one of the good guys and, generally speaking, a class act. But now the wheel has turned and it's Golovkin who's taking too way too long to make anything happen. It's time to retire and try to do for Kazakhstan what Manny Pacquiao has done for the Philippines.Comment

I personally think GGG is vacating all of his titles in a bid to set up a huge fight in Kazakhstan with Zhanibek for the WBO title - the only Middleweight championship he is yet to win. Golovkin already has enough money in the bank and does not need to fight meaningless mandatories at this stage in his career. I imagine he'd like his last few fights to all be big events and from his point of view it probably doesn't get bigger than fighting a fellow Kazak for the world title in front of home fans.

Don't blame him but people would s*** on him regardless of whether he took the mandatory or dropped the belt. At 41 he has a couple fights left I'm sure now that he's old and people are lining up to fight him he should find an opponent easily enough.Comment
