It's because he has good fundamentals. Now imagine what someone with great fundamentals plus speed plus head movement like Andrade or Charlo would do to him.


This fight should have proved to the world why he ran away from the 154/160 divisions to pick on the weak 168lb division.

Styles make fights. Andrade I could easily see losing to Joe Smith but shutting out Canelo 12-0. Canelo has no heart like Joe, he's not going to take the risks he'd need to to beat Andrade.

I think Bivol's ability to catch and shoot surprised Canelo. Saul is so used to throwing his punches without much coming back, that he wasn't ready for someone to catch one of his right hooks for example, with an immediate left hook of their own. Bivol even did that when Canelo threw to the body. It was such a drastic change from previous opponents that it was obvious Canelo didn't know what else to do.

But, those fighters often wasted a lot of movement, gave up the center of the ring, took bait, gave into risks, and forfeited their discipline in the process. They never looked half as sharp as they did in the earlier rounds.

I believe that's also why Canelo adopted that higher-guard, plodding style, as he's not forced to exhaust as much effort early, then he can just ratio-out what he has left later and put them away.

Bivol forced Canelo to use more energy early, and by the later rounds when Canelo tends to have his way, he found himself the one at the wrong end of the stick.

Bivol is pretty basic. He kept hitting Canelo with the same combo over and over, but Canelo couldn't do **** to stop it. He really was the perfect opponent for a great counterpuncher. The problem is we just vastly overestimated Canelo's ability.

Canelo struggles with rangy fighters and since short armed Canelo can only fight at one range he was easy work for Bivol.

Well at least he fought a guy completely out of his comfort zone. Who did Floyd fight who was similar who arms was longer Paul Williams oh yeah I forgot he would have been easy work but he needed a two year vacation if it wasn't for that oh yeah easy work.

As I said before the fight, Bivol is very good at controlling distance and has quick feet. What I hadn't seen though was how tight his defense could be.

People crack me up with comments about how a fighter is "basic" when what they are seeing is a fundamentally sound fighter. Bivol is fundamentally sound, it's hard to find a weakness to key on.

Humm, fundamentally sound vs basic, is there a difference? I'm not sure there is.
