Why are people saying Bivol was a stylistic nightmare for Canelo?

If you looked at both guys in the ring, Canelo had a small lip over his trunks. It wasent much, but those who followed his whole career would have noticed it. Bivol was taller, leaner, more muscular.
Canelo tried the wide right hand to the body all night. Often it completely missed, which takes big energy to pull back. If he did make contact it was usually still short and was blocked my Bivol’s elbow.
I don’t think it was Bivol’s style so much as size, length, strength, durability, focus, that gave Bivol the edge. It was Canelo’s style that let him down. Canelo had a harder time reaching Bivol. He didn’t do the damage he was used to when he did. Style wise maybe you could say the pace was more then he was used to, but it’s not like it was close to the highest volume affairs that we see.
Canelo did better when he used the jab but he mostly abandoned it thinking he could just walk Bivol down with his hooks. He also got too cute with his hands down head slipping which didn’t serve him here. He also got tired.
Basically nobody he fought in recent years prepared him for this sort of challenge. This is a guy who thought he could fight at cruiser or challenge Usyk remember.
Most people though it’d be close and that Canelo would get the Stroke on the cards if it was. He did get the stroke on the cards. The judges gave him the path to win it or get a draw. He just needed to win one of the last three rounds to not lose. He just didn’t have anything left and couldn’t do it.

Why are you bringing up that bum. Floyd would have schooled that cat. And Floyd has been fighting outside of his comfort zone for most of his WW career. The first time Canelo fought someone big and rangy he folded.Comment

Gtfoh Floyd totally avoided that guy and I can't think of a long rangy guy at the higher weights outside of Conor McGregor and who was the Youtube guyComment

Dmitry Bivol wouldn't even rank in the top 20 of risks Mayweather took in his career. Canelo outweighed Bivol by a good 5 lbs. Canelo's style relies on him entering the ring 10-20lbs more than his opponent so he can take their punches like nothing and make his opponents terrified of his power. This was obvious after round 2 when canelo realized his uppercuts couldn't do **** to Bivol and he was actually stung by Bivol's jab. His face was one of a completely defeated man after round 2.
Every fight Floyd fought at 147 or 154 he came into the ring with at least a 10lb weight disadvantage, sometimes more.
Let me ask you this. Has Canelo every ONCE fought someone who outweighed him?Last edited by TernceBudCharlo; 05-16-2022, 08:02 PM.Comment

When was Floyd at a significant height and reach disadvantage at welterweight or jmw and I don't mean an inch or two or some shopworn fighterComment

I would say 175 for Canelo is a more comfortable natural weight than 160 would have been for Floyd, but my point still stands.
Floyd's ability to compete as he moved up in weight was very impressive, as he imo was not really a guy much heavier naturally than some of the weights he was fighting at. But at some point a guy is just too big....
Alvarez has no issue putting on mass, to hit 175 and higher.
The highest Mayweather at his peak, could of went was 154 pounds.
I can remember the fight night weights being shown live, during Mayweather fights. I can specifically remember one fight were, he was 146 pounds.
Mayweather on fight night was actually below his weigh in weight etc.Comment

Canelo struggles with jabbers. GGG basically won using the jab, got robbed anyway. Floyd won the fight using his jab. If Reynoso was worth a shyt he would teach Canelo how to slip the jab and get inside of it, and/or counter it. Canelo himself doesn't use his jab enough to get inside and create openings. His jab and total punch output during the Lara fight was pathetic. Again, Lara out jabbed him and should have won. He also struggled with Trout who out-landed his jab on a 2-1 ratio and lost a very close fight that many feel he should have won.Comment

His punch selection is actually very good, it's underrated. Actually I think a lot of things about Bivol are underappreciated because they get lost under this umbrella term of "fundamentals".
One of the reasons he was able to pierce Canelo's guard better than most is because Canelo was never totally sure when, or what, Bivol was going to throw. There was no obvious tell or rhythm to his punching, it was not predictable. He also varied the speed and power of his shots very well to keep Canelo guessing. There were a lot of touch jabs, double jabs, throwaway hooks and the like, then suddenly it's a hard right hand and left hook followed by another hard straight right to the body.
All the while he is using lots of subtle feints with his lead hand, feinting to the body by bending his knees and using all-round excellent footwork to offset Canelo, switching directions when needed and never staying in one spot. As soon as his back touched the ropes he pivoted off. It was beautiful, and everything I've just mentioned (and much more) can be witnessed in pretty much any thirty second clip of the fight you care to dive into.
Then when he let loose with combinations they were explosive yet fluid, and every shot was solid because he maintained perfect balance while punching (which is not easy to do). That GIF in jaded's sig is an excellent illustration.
In short, it's a gross disservice to describe Bivol as simply having "good fundamentals".Comment
