Why are people saying Bivol was a stylistic nightmare for Canelo?

he blocked everything canelo threw

canelo tried several methods to no avail. he tried body shots, mostly blocked by bivols elbows, he tried hooking around his guard, mostly landed on his gloves still, he tried splitting the guard and uppercuts but those were still blocked.

all these same shots were landing on lesser skilled opponents.


Hes got 300 amateur fights, these guys are different. Usyk only got 19 pro fights, bivol only got 20 pro fights, Loma 16 fights. Plus some of those semi pro fights. These guys experience and skill are far above what a normal pro with only 20 fights performs at.

It was remarkable how many shots Bivol caught with his gloves and elbows. Really, very little was getting through. Great job by him,he had a great high guard!

I do think Canelo was scoring some to the body early, but then abandoned that to head hunt and be content hitting elbows, arms, and gloves. If they do rematch, Canelo needs to spend the first few rounds hitting the body, slow Bivol down with body work.

Bivol is pretty basic. He kept hitting Canelo with the same combo over and over, but Canelo couldn't do **** to stop it. He really was the perfect opponent for a great counterpuncher. The problem is we just vastly overestimated Canelo's ability.

Canelo struggles with rangy fighters and since short armed Canelo can only fight at one range he was easy work for Bivol.

As you move up in weight, and fight bigger guys, they won't need to do as much exceptional stuff to beat you. Their size can be enough, combined with whatever ability they have.

Floyd was a great fighter, but he was smart as he moved up in weight - he never really fought anyone too much bigger than him naturally. If he went to 160 and fought a natural good MW like Martinez or GGG he would have had plenty of problems as well.

I would say 175 for Canelo is a more comfortable natural weight than 160 would have been for Floyd, but my point still stands.

Floyd's ability to compete as he moved up in weight was very impressive, as he imo was not really a guy much heavier naturally than some of the weights he was fighting at. But at some point a guy is just too big....

It's because he has good fundamentals. Now imagine what someone with great fundamentals plus speed plus head movement like Andrade or Charlo would do to him.


This fight should have proved to the world why he ran away from the 154/160 divisions to pick on the weak 168lb division.

Canelo struggles with that like you said in the OP because his feet are slow.

Combine that with size advantage Bivol had and he’s got a problem.
