He’s absolutely overrated.
Literally a lot of people call him the greatest because ALI used to call himself the greatest. He beat a slow heavy handed Foreman, lost to Fraiser and was knocked down by a bum, and robbed Norton many times.
If you call yourself the greatest after every interview people who aren’t knowledgeable of boxing will just assume it so and accept it.MikeyMike100 likes this.

Joe Frazier he's pretty much known for giving Ali his first loss. Quarry, Ellis, Bonavena, Foster, these guys had loads of losses when he fought them and he fought a few of them a few times. Never fought Lyle or Norton, Foreman turned him into a leprechaun. Not a ATG but Ali make him ATG title reign nothing special
Ali lost to Spinks a decent fighter at best yet again Ali fans think Spinks is some god and always mention him in Alis resume Ali media hype is in another level
Frazier Norton Listo, Lyle, Young Folley, Bonavena, Quarry are not different than Ruddock Tucker Mercer Moorer Byrd Alis resume is no better than any other great0 dominant HW champ But Ali era got and still the most media attention and exposure his myth and resume are distorted
has the best wins of any heavyweight ever
28 fight win streak liston
Undefeated foreman
Won triology with frazier
That's 4 wins against 3 of the all time top 10.
His Resume trumps any heavyweight you name. who has 4 better wins?

Great boxer though.
Ali was a political statement
Ali was in no danger
Do you think they'll dump ali in the jungle to die? Come on
That'd be bad press.
They were gonna use ali for propaganda purposes. They were gonna use him for like USO morale boosting stuff..
A lot of black kids looked up to ali, u.s. military wanted ali in a military uniform and do pressers
Ali didn't want that.
Yeah with other draft dodgers you can call them cowards but for someone famous like ali, it actually hurt him more to dodge the draft

I think most contenders from the Ali era get overrated because of their association with Ali.
I don't see why on average they were better than the names you mentioned from the 90s and Byrd
