Fighters who most threw away their career?

It really hit home when Shawn Porter was talked up as the best opponent Bud "Terence" Crawford had ever faced... when he'd already faced Kell and Kell had beaten Porter.

That really shows how much he threw away. I'm not getting into any "if he'd faced Crawford before GGG..." or any of that. That's not what I'm talking about.

What I'm talking about is that the guy allowed himself to be smashed up so badly - thanks to his genius plan to step up two weight classes and face a prime GGG - that his reputation fell below that of someone he'd comfortably beaten.

Obviously the Brook of 2020 was a completely different animal from the Brook of 2014, but how does your rep get so low that someone you beat is regarded as being more of a test? Even if Porter wasn't as shopworn as Kell.

Even when he fought Errol Spence, he was initially outboxing Spence and was ahead on points before his glass eyes started to give out. Yet now people talk about him like he was always domestic level.

That guy could have been someone, but seemed to really sabotage his own career. A lot of it was through chasing Khan... at least he got to put that to bed tonight.

lot of the haymon fighters wasted their talent and careers, got big money through haymon and never took the fights that could have propelled their careers and secured bigger money when the haymon purse ran out. Charlos are some that come to mind, gary russel, but also crawford and mikey garcia

but yea kell brook was the most talented welterweight the UK has had in a while, it's a shame they dropped the ball with him.

actually nm, you right that kell brook did sort of throw away his career, from what i remember he took the ggg fight because it was the biggest payday he would have received.

I always think Andre Dirrel squandered his potential.

Though it's hard to recall anyone who wilfully got fucked up like Kell did.

Kell was a seriously good boxer, even against Triple G, he was out boxing him, he just wasn't big enough to keep GGG off. And then coming off that, he was out boxing Spence too, even though he was a shadow of the man he was.

          Definitely a wasted talent.

Kell Brook vs Canelo Alvarez what a fight it would be at 154 in 2015.

Brook was drained even at his prime at 147.

Broner has to be in there as well.
He was never as good as what he was weight bullying guys at lower weights but if he kept his head on straight he could have been a guy that won some fights and got fed to top guys for good paydays.
Instead his legal problems have drained him and he’s no longer had many prospects.

Stepping up to MW for GGG was a gamble that backfired, but not the crazy gamble many made it out to be. Brook was a very big WW. He was actually a couple of ounces heavier than GGG at the fight day weight check! Stepping up to the MW champ was something many WW champs had done before, and successfully too.

Brook's 2 big mistakes, imo, were getting himself stabbed up on a dodgy night-time mission while on holiday, which kept him out of the ring for over a year. And - biggest mistake of all - going back down to WW for a mandatory defence against Spence in his come back fight from major reconstructive surgery on his face after getting it smashed by GGG.

We know how that worked out. And he then compounded the error by once more draining himself down to a weight he had clearly outgrown to get KTFO by Crawford.

Kell had some success when Golovkin was mindlessly barrelling forward after hurting Him in rd 1. It lasted for about 2 minutes, then Golovkin got behind his jab and that’s all she wrote.
