Yep. Kovalev was very competitive. His long jab and staying outside gave Canelo fits. Canelo was not expecting for Kovalev to fight smart. He likely thought he would get an aggressive Kovalev and KO him coming in, in the early rounds. Canelo had to adjust and get past that long jab. That is easier said than done vs an opponent with longer reach, taller, and has pop.
I will tell you who looked like a shot fighter was Benavidez when he fought Gavril.
It’s amusing to me, anyone who says Canelo is scared of Benavidez. Benavidez’s style was made to order for Canelo. He will beat him down, break him down for 12 rounds or stop him late. Two different levels. It is not worth it right now for Canelo. It won’t mean anything.
The issue with an elite fighter taking on a green fighter, and that elite fighter being the first good fighter the green guy has faced, is that if the elite fighters win, critics will just say the green fighter is….well…..green. Rightly so. Problem is, it takes for the fight to happen and come to a conclusion for critics to then say what was true all along. Boxing fans, the majority of them, don’t stick to their guns. It’s very unfortunate to see.
