There are 2 separate things - one is whether he would put his belt on the line at a catch-weight. He said he would not.

The other is whether he would fight a big PPV fight at a non-MW weight. He said he would if it was available.

He said he would fight Canelo at 154, he said he would not fight Canelo at 155. That would seem weird in isolation, but the reason he would not do the latter is because he didn't think the belt should be on the line at a catch-weight. He clearly said that.

It's not "AFTER **** got real" ... you just misunderstood.

He said he would fight big fights at 154 or 168. He didn't say he would fight at any weight between 154 and 168, but that those specific weights were possible.

He didn't think that the MW belt should be fought at a catch-weight, which is why he didn't want to fight between 155-159. He said that he would fight a non-MW fight at 154 or 168 though, if it was a big PPV attraction.

Ward @ 168 would have been a bigger fight than golovkin had up until that point; golovkin didn't want that work.

No, I disagree. He just was really solid in the big fights. No spectacular highs, no spectacular lows. Consistency is what makes any man or athlete great. It's what made GGG great. No real surprise that he was so consistent in the big fights. He was consistent in all his fights. It's what made him great - no slip ups, like Teo tonight for example. Or Charlo vs a Korbov etc.

He got the job done just in a workmanlike fashion. Smart fighter.

I agree, of course GGG was great overall. The way he stopped everyone all his stricken opponents spoke highly of his abilities, he was ducked like the plaque and waited til he was past prime, GGG can't be penalised for that and in fact must be compensated for it, in way of praise and superlatives.
His resume might not be as good as it could have been but that's because he was avoided, yes because he was great.
So whatever angle you look at it, GGG is great

Tbh I think GGG gets stopped if he they fight again. Canelo is still juiced to the gills and in his prime, GGG is pushing 40 now and its not like hes been active and staying sharp since the last fight.
