I've been watching boxing for over 50 yrs and Canelo , in my view , is very ordinary. What he is , is a decent boxer , with a great chin and good power. He's very fortunate he doesn't have to deal with " greats " in their prime. It is what it is , he's the best of a bad bunch. It's not his fault. He was fighting tougher fighters years ago. Now he's just collecting paper belts that look great on the resume.
I knew old people were bitter, but damn

    • I knew Plant was in trouble after round 3. You can't beat Canelo with no movement and just a jab. Canelo is a power puncher/boxer. You have to hit Canelo hard in order to get his respect and have a chance at winning. Canelo is operating at an unreal level these days. Boxers with no power attack have no chance against Canelo.

Sure he at times showed great defense but the reality is that he landed 59 power punches in the fight according to compubox. That's about 5 punches per rd if you divide across 11 rds. Canelo landed about 56 body punches, that means that canelo threw to the body knowing that would eventually make plants defense fail him in the later rounds. Reality is that canelo is out there playing chess looking at the bigger scheme of things and plant was thinking round by round. He didn't muster enough offense and he was really trying to keep canelo at bay, but canelo the whole time was adding rounds to the bank. Late round knock out was mostly decent boxing analyst predictions and that's what it was. What a great fight !
I gave Plant two rounds. This was a one sided fight.

It was a garbage fight but it was one of the cleanest windup uppercuts you'll ever see. Worth making a gif if you have the time.

              • I believe most of us knew deep down that even though Plant was a real live challenge, Canelo would prove too good.

I wonder where the limit is for Canelo. Most pundits predict he will seek out a fight with 175 pound WBA champ Dmitry Bivol.

Canelo commented on the DAZN boxing show (which was embarrassingly sycophantic except for a couple of questions) that he believes Bivol is the better boxer than Beterbiev.

I think either fighter would present his toughest challenge to date. Bivol is a tremendous all-around boxer with sublime skills across the board, with the only question being whether he possesses KO power.

Beterbiev would be more hittable but might be the first fighter to test Canelo's chin.

I will finally give Canelo unreserved respect if he fights either at the LHW limit, and full training camps, no catch weights, or trying to lock them in right after a fight.

                • What a night tonight we all just have to start appreciating Canelos greatness which doesn’t come along that often.

I don't really agree, but I respect your opinion, and you make a reasonable, valid point.

The greatest thing about Canelo is his dedication to his craft, he is a genuine student of the sport. He is blessed with a granite chin, and a good solid muscular frame, so those are inherently natural advantages.

His worst M.O. is when he became the Floyd Mayweather Jr of the sport, building himself up as boxing sweepstakes/lottery, and many of his former fights he used every Mayweather-type negotiation trick in the book to gain the greatest advantage - some are considered ethical, others not so much.

The way he negotiated the ChavezJr, Kovalev fights were unfair, and lets not forget how much chaos he caused in the MW division with his shenanigans, positive Clenbuterol test, demanding every penny of his 365 million dollars, 11 fight deal despite a pandemic going on.

The way he treated ODLH who helped to secure that deal wasn't very gentlemanly, although I've heard Oscar can be difficult when he's off the wagon.

Ultimately I think he's a great fighter, the most improved, is entertaining to watch, obviously a very shrewd businessman, but what he does from now to retirement will weight heavily on his legacy.

As to how he would fair against prime versions of RJJ, James Toney, Jermain Taylor, Hopkins, SRL, and a host of others is a difficult call as I haven't figured out whether Canelo is the type of fighter who rises to his level of opposition, or fights every opponent the same way.

                    • It's pathetic that people keep stay by the side of a cheater, of a team cheater and a trainer who has the nerve to show his face like a honest man. His team is so full of PEDS that Lance Armstrong would become read. GGG is able to take all his best shots, got robbed and after that Canelo got a suspension fight the rematch and what a surprise he became Hulk after that, what is wrong with some people is a mistery to me,......use your brain, be real not a bandwagon.
