Harry Greb fought nearly 60 top 10 P4P fighters and went 40-12-5 against them spending over 9 years on the P4P list.
He fought a staggering 28 top 3 P4P fighters going 4-1 vs the #1 P4P fighters in a short period of time.
Imagine how much better his record would be when you realise most of those losses came at the hands of the much, much bigger Gene Tunney. Greb walked around at a shade over 160lbs he'd be nothing but a good size WW today. Do you know how insane that is? We have excuses today this guy weighed 3lbs more, this fighter weight drained the other by 2lbs. This guy was 160lbs soaking wet and hospitalising some of the finest fighters to ever live that were twice his size.
Greb was obviously great, especially considering he fought a lot of fights without sight in one eye I read somewhere. Tunney beat him 3 out of 4 times I think, and was a career light heavy until the end. Still bigger than Greb but not like he was a big heavy. Tunney was ahead of his time as far as skill, but you can't deny Grebs accomplishments, and giving Tunney his only loss.
The P4P list didn't exist when greb was fighting so where you getting this info from?
This exactly, hell, ratings period before 30s is hard to find and even then they're not numbered, they're grouped "outstanding boxers" "logical contenders" "honorable mentions" **** like. p4p is not a thing until SRR. To my knowledge.
Lol…”top 10 ATG doe. Read the newspapers doe. You don’t know how to read doe. You are ****** because you can’t visualize a good boxer through literature doe!”
Man that guy looks absolutely awful. Fck man. He looks like a child who is fighting for the first time.
Seeing his style, it makes me wonder just how bad boxers were at that time if HE is among the best?
Talk about having no competition. I mean I know all he had as competition were other robotic and unathletic fighters.
It’s like watching Jerry West do a lay up and then watching Michael Jordan be an athletic freak. Day and night.
It’s so sad that in boxing, the fighters of the past are the only one’s who can be labeled top 10 great and can’t be replaced. It’s no wonder that Americas great white hypes are now extinct. They can no longer compete in the sport because it became so international. It is no longer full of unathletic, awful boxers like him. Lol he is an ATG and HOF’er who fought like THAT? That is so ridiculous. There is no newspaper or radio recording that would make me erase his awful technique.
Admittedly I don't care for todays p4p lists let alone those over 100 years back.
Maybe P4P is more a recent thing, I have no idea when it was formed but looking at the guys he fought I think that the list I seen was probably not too far-fetched in all fairness but I am sure someone who studied boxing history very deeply could shed more light on the rankings.
I have no issue with the list whether its official or not, all P4P lists are a bit silly imo
If anything I am quite surprised Gene Tunney was as low as #3
Maybe its his own personal data base through years of studying. I'm uncertain but whoever compiled it has gone to some effort and research and it seems consistent throughout I'd say and while I'm anything but a boxing historian I wouldn't have thought the list was too far-fetched.
If there was a P4P list at the time or one was to be created based on their resumes and such I don't think there is many you could argue with on the list.
