I remember the time rolando navarette was knocked down by choi chung il when they fought in the Philippines. I counted using a timer that navarette was down on the floor and it was 17 seconds. Navarette got up to win the fight by decision.

also, an 8 or 10 count usually takes longer then 10 seconds.. the rules say that a fighter has to be up by the count of ten.. not in ten seconds for this very reason.

Fighters listen to the refs count for a reason. They do not have a timer buit inside them.

Indeed. The fighter listens to the ref and rightly so.

History is full of incidents where so-called 'long counts' has been administered. The most famous being the count Gene Tunney got when he was KD'ed by Jack Dempsey who failed to go to a neutral corner.

If I remember correctly... which I'm not sure if this is right since I haven't seen the fight in ages but Pacquiao wouldn't stay in his corner therefor he delayed the count right?
If a fighter isn't in a neutral corner then the ref doesn't start counting until he is.

I think there's another referee that will automaticaly count it when a fighter went down. then the official referee will pick it up after making sure the other fighter is in the neutral corner.

Tarvers KO of Roy and KT over Judah looks very fast. I even think Roy could have beat the count. but that looks so much faster than this one.

what i want to know is how should the ref count it? a regular 10 secs can be a count of 8 or a count of 12 for a referee. whats the rule? its all on the ref's discretion?
