Comments Thread For: Gervonta Davis, The Favored 'A' Side, Is In A No-Win Situation Against Mario Barrios

Everyone is trying to tell me Barrios is good.
He’s not. Super lightweight has been promoted to death and this guy is a no-name. There’s are eight guys in the division who are a bigger deal than Barrios. And that’s in a division that has an undisputed champion
Also, his fake title came in a fight everyone thinks he lost.
Its not biased. It’s fact.
This fight would be fine if Davis was moving to 140 and was testing the waters.
Barrios would be a totally suitable warm up fight to Josh Taylor.
Instead, it’s Davis’ one attempt at 140, we’re pretending there’s a title on the line, it’s on PPV and Barrios is being labelled as a threat.
Thats all nonsense. Davis is one of the most talented boxers around and Barrios is a no name. Davis via murder is the obvious outcome.

Davis moved down to him from 135. Leo was the WBA 130 champ, not moving up to fight Davis. Many change the narrative. Leo was not moving up to 130 to fight Davis.Comment

Ya the wba is really a joke . Davis is really a 1 time champion teo and Taylor are the legit wba champions . I like Davis as a fighter but these boxing politics are ridiculous.WBA really has no shame. They know that the boxing world knows about their WBA regular/super title corruption and they don’t bother removing it. They do it for only one reason obviously, more sanctioning fees. They are blatant too, it’s not even something they hide. When a business man is fcking over their clients/customers, the businessman usually attempts to hide the fckening. Taylor is the clear champion of 140. WBA needs to gtfoh with their BS.
As for Tank vs Barrios, i’m not sure about all this “weak opponent” stuff. I’ve seen some footage of Barrios and he is a definitely live dog. His physical advantages are also hard to ignore. If he can take a good punch and is willing to come forward and pressure Davis, we may see an upset. The predictions of this fight reminds me of Cotto-Margarito I. The majority thought Cotto would win, the odds favored Cotto, posters mostly favored Cotto. But to me I really didn’t see how Cotto will win.
So while, yes I favor Tank to edge out Barrios, I don’t see why some people are writing off Barrios. He has good punch selection, doesn’t throw them wildly, has really good hand speed and he is pretty good at countering. My officially is Tank. But that’s only if Tank is taking this guy real serious. This is not a fight he should be taking lightly. Fans want to call him a cherrypick for Tank but I fail to see how this is supposed to be an easy fight for Davis.
I predict we see 12 rounds and Barrios will be a very game opponent.Comment

Good post. As long as he stays active, at any weight, I'm all good.
Agree with you, not an easy fight. I think the author is right, it's lose/lose for Tank. Except for one thing and that's if he wins then he did, in fact, move up two weight classes and get his hand raised. I'm not a big Davis fan at all but he has undeniable talent and potential. Kudos to him for taking (and asking for, apparently) a lose-lose fight. We always hear talk about wanting fighters to take chances or challenge themselves, we should recognize and appreciate when someone does. Sure, is he going for Taylor? No, it's not that kind of challenge where he jumps up for the top dog in the division. But fighting a guy that much bigger than you presents challenges, anyone who has ever fought or sparred a guy that much bigger knows it. Credit where credit is due. I think Tank KO10 and it won't be good enough for plenty but it'll definitely impress me at least a little bit.Comment

What I find hilarious is no other sport in the history of EVER sports chubbies over promotional companies. This is why sports fans silo boxing fans into the categorization of non graduate, uneducated, former felons. How could they be wrong? Ever hear a baseball fan go on all year long about how VP of marketing just isn’t cutting it? Or a basketball fan harp endlessly about the owner nonstop? No.. They make the sport about the people who partake in the sport not the sideshows as boxing does.PBC-owned site gets pro-PBC writer to do pro-PBC article, pro-PBC shills then come and praise it.
What I find hilarious is that the article is giving Tank so much credit for who he fights, even using the phrase "masterful matchmaking". Yet he also works so hard to say that we should feel sorry for Tank because boxing fans aren't falling for these cherry pick fights.
"Poor Tank, no matter who he cherry picks, people still call it a cherry pick, haterz!!"
This is why we are seen as a mentally stunted lot.Comment

He beat LSC back in October was it? They announced this fight, what? - 8/10 weeks ago. You could argue that they waited for 6 months and in those 6 months they could surely have got a fight organised with one of Haney/Loma/Lopez. Lopez would have given up his IBF to fight Tank. Loma would have jumped at it. Haney too.
Taylor ain't my boy, man, like you I think he's a bit of an asshat, however I do have a great deal of respect for the dude's achievements. That's where we differ I think. If I had to pick my favourite guy at 140 it'd be Regis (I got respect for Ramirez as a good man, but as a boxer Regis has far greater talent)
But I do think it's a decent - smart - move by Tank or whoever's guiding him (whether it's Haymon or Ellerbee). There really weren't many options right now at 135 and most of the action is either with TR or DAZN, it keeps him active and a title (even a secondary one) can help to sell future fights... plus like you say it plants a flag at 140 for any future moves in that division.
That said if Tank looks good here, and I expect him to, Taylor vs Davis does become a mouthwatering prospect, not that I'd expect Arum or necessarily Haymon to particularly want it. Those promotional divisions are really ****ing us all, including the fighters themselves.
But here's the thing - for the last 3/4 years Ellerbe and MWP have been declaring that Tank is gonna be a PPV star.
This has 2 favorable outcomes - 1/ if you declare it enough the casuals will actually tune in to see what all the fuss is about and 2/ by declaring their man the A side it frustrates great fights from coming to fruition because they're going to demand a huge 'A' side purse no matter the merits of Lopez/Loma/Haney. I'll be surprised if Lopez Tank gets made any time soon. More chance of Spence-Crawford.Comment
