I said this same thing at a press conference back in 2005...I said "Jeff is a strong guy, heavy handed of course, etc etc but it puzzles me when you all (Gary Shaw was there, etc) say what a wicked, brutal puncher he is"...I said Tommy Hearns, Julian Jackson and Bob Foster regularly scored VICIOUS 1 punch brutalizations...guys didn't have time to quit on their stools when they landed right...I also said at 168 James Toney and Roy Jones were much more formidable and difficult...I said he was a good fighter, don't get me wrong, but that he was overrated in the sense that you guys all got him at elite level already...and everybody there thought I was crazy, they made a joke of it, like I didnt know what I was talking about...well, a few months later Joe C. came along and they were amused any longer...

(and, believe me, it is no offense to Jeff...I mean, if he hits you solid you will know it, especially when he was on his game, but I always maintained that his biggest backers (Shaw, Birmingham etc) didnt take into account the fact that there are LEVELS of punchers...Oscar could hit, Hopkins can hit, Jeff can hit, etc....Howard Davis and Calvin Grove, not nearly as much....but Tommy, Julian and Bob? That's another level for you altogether...

I think this... if Jones was 22 years old and someone never saw him before, he was a new up and comer who fought Lacy last night in a step up fight... and fought exactly as he did last night with the blistering hooks, the confidence, the ability to relax under fire, the BODY SHOTS, the ring intelligence, etc etc etc...they would say "by the time that kids career is over, he will be the greatest fighter ever." Now it is what it is. Jeff is obviously past his prime but he is still Jeff Lacy....no one has ever done that to him before, not even Calzaghe...I dont care if a guy is "shot" he can still punch hard if thats what he does...Jeff's POWER didnt leave him...and Roy is much older anyway than Jeff is...has had a TON more fights and was stopped twice, one of them a VICIOUS KO...so he has a ton more miles on him than Jeff does...to look as good as he did last night, even if u hate him, that's impressive, man...

Roy Jones impressed me last night. His hand speed was amazing.

Those 7 punch, left hook combos were amazing. He has the speed and the smarts but he just needs something in the mental confidence department...his dad was back in his corner as well which could have been the difference.

Roy Jones Jr. took Jeff Lacy to school, consistently beating him to the punch and out speeding him. All around, Roy Jones Jr. had too much for Lacy; Jones was comfortable through out, constantly showboating and putting on a great display for the live crowd.

Jeff Lacy was a perfect opponent for Roy Jones to look good against, but if Jones is 'shot to pieces' like a lot of boxing fans proclaim, that's the best shot fighter I've seen in ages. Jones was impressive, fighting well on the inside. Roy is still damn fast for a 40 year old, and I think, a legit top 5 light heavyweight.

Last year, on the night of November 8, I was hoping Jones would ride off into retirement. Now, I'm changing my tune. THIS Roy Jones Jr., with the high guard, often jabbing, fundamentals first, looks good for a 'shot to pieces' boxer. I feel Roy would have a good chance of beating anyone at light heavyweight.

Could I be jumping the gun? Possibly. But it doesn't matter. I want to see Roy continue to fight. The man says he wants to fight on, and looked great, so he should be able to do so without boxing fans harping on him to quit.

Roy Jones Jr. says he wants to fight Australian, Danny Green in his next fight. I think that is a winnable fight for Roy - and if successful, could lead to one last big fight for him, against the likes of Chad Dawson. I think that is Jones' intention; to get one last, major fight.

Do I feel Jones could beat Dawson? Absolutely. But honestly, I wouldn't favor Jones. Dawson would apply the same formula that Calzaghe applied, that of pressure and a constant stream of punches. But Dawson doesn't have Calzaghe's work ethic or stamina, so Jones, in my opinion, would have a better chance of beating Dawson than he did Calzaghe.

One thing is cemented - Roy Jones Jr. is entertaining, win or lose, even at 40 years of age.

You are right, though ; there are "levels" when it comes to punching. How Lacy ever got his reputation as a vicious ****er is beyond me ; he lacks that "one punch power" that can turn around or completely end a fight.

Side note ; I haven't seen the fight yet but from what I just read about Jeff's corner they sounded like a couple of unprofessional ****s.
