Roy does everything about textbook, why do people say he doesnt. He just doesnt keep his hands up until he's getting punched at.

Because he still doesn't admit that he has gotten older or is anything less than what he use to be physically.

Maybe you guys should ask Iceman John Scully who sparred with him and saw him since the amateurs if "Roy learned the basics".

Nah, you shouldn't because this thread would be dead.

I am CONSTANTLY perplexed as to why people constantly say RJ used his natural ability, didnt have the basics, etc etc...I really don't get that at all...Roy Jones could FIGHT, MAN! Roy Jones had very good technique, he was a very smart fighter, very intelligent in the ring, used text book maneuvers on thousands of occasions...I mean, people often act as though he just used these "natural talents," like he was born with them??? You have to LEARN HOW to fight, how to do the things RJ did in that ring... you dont just jump in there and do those things without being taught...and contrary to popular belief there is no set way to box, no book that teaches you how to do things, what punches u are supposed to throw etc etc...I know for a fact that Big Roy used to sometimes keep lil' Roy in the gym for more than four hours at a time, practicing moves and techniques...I was there for some of it, saw it with my own eyes...Roy Jones PERFECTED moves and maneuvers and techniques, he made many of them appear so effortless that some still mistakenly believe he was just born with these skills or something...people say "he never learned how to fight properly"....I mean, WHAT exactly does that even mean? What is "properly"???

              I agree....

all good answers in here tho... mangler, he definitely knows the basics homie.. you're talking about a student of the game... he just didnt need to use them in his prime... its harder to fight someone who is as unorthodox as he is.. his entire style is based on setting traps and counterpunching in a completely unorthodox way

Roy Jones learned all of the basics, it's just that he did so in an unorthadox way. He just isn't the same as he once was now.
