see the thing is, i think roy DID learn the basics but he was so naturally gifted that he relied on his gifts anyway, i say this because whenever he would be a commentator on hbo fights he always knew what would happen from a technical standpoint.. so yea

A great number of fighters have "learnt the basics" as you say. They aren't all undefeated HOFers.

like when he fought vinny pazienza, he constantly jabbed pazienze and paz couldnt land anythin on roy because roy kept his distance with his jab, same with the john ruiz fight, and few other fights..
besides if roy didnt learn the basics, its not as if those gifts would have been anythin without the basics, those reflexes and quickness were polished by years of training conditioning and practice, roy sr. used to make roy jr. fight people twice his age with one hand tied behind his back, and roy sr. said he did that so that he took away roy's best hand and forced roy to use the jab

Every serious fighter learns the basics, especially one that is pushed as hard as Jones Jr was as a kid. I think Jones just ignored the boxing fundamentals because his opposition was so outmatched. The style worked for him so much as a professional, so he just stuck by it.

He had an awkward and unique style, but he had to learn the basics for years in order to develop that. If it was just quickness and reflexes, then Michael Jordan would be the best boxer of all-time.
