I know he was a great athlete that had power and quickness in his prime but is the reason he never transitioned as an older fighter like Hopkins because he ignored the basics and relied entirely on his natural gifts.

He never learnt how to hook properly. -
He made his own style which is dubbed as "awkward", and his manner of fighting in addition to his natural gifts befuddled opponents. Unfortunately for Jones the style he created relied mostly on speed and reflexes and when those faded so did his aura of invincibility.......still he had tactics that were all his own, he used his natural abilities when calculating his battle plan but didn't try and coast by entirely with what nature gave him.Comment

Roy learned the basics. I think it's ignorant to say that he didn't. Roy Sr said recently that Roy doesn't get the respect he deserves for the hard work he puts in. One of the reasons for this is the ignorance displayed to Roy not knowing basics and believing that Roy woke up one day and was freakishly good at boxing. Like Roy Sr said Roy Jr learned to fight the hard way because Roy Sr pushed him very hard.Comment

Yes Roy learned the basics. His father was ruthless and drilled him on the basic skills of boxing for hours on end when he was an amateur. Watch a prime Roy Jones throw jabs and tell me he didn't learn the basics.Comment
