MMA has been around longer than boxing. (from wikipedia)

While different forms of unorganized, no-rules, unarmed combat predate history, civilization, and even the human species itself (even apes fight hand-to-hand), the earliest documented, organized, minimal-rules fighting event was the ancient Greek pankration, which was introduced into the Olympic Games in 648 B.C.[5] Greek pankration later inspired the more violent Etruscan and Roman pancratium, an event showcased at the Roman Colosseum. Even as late as the Early Middle Ages, statues were put up in Rome and other cities to honour remarkable pankratiasts of Rome.

No-holds-barred events reportedly took place in the late 1800s when wrestlers representing a huge range of fighting styles, including various catch wrestling styles, Greco-Roman wrestling and many others met in tournaments and music-hall challenge matches throughout Europe. In the USA the first major encounter between a boxer and a wrestler in modern times took place in 1887 when John L. Sullivan, then heavyweight world boxing champion, entered the ring with his trainer, Greco-Roman wrestling champion William Muldoon, and was slammed to the mat in two minutes. The next publicized encounter occurred in the late 1890s when future heavyweight boxing champion Bob Fitzsimmons took on European Greco-Roman wrestling champion Ernest Roeber. Reportedly, Roeber suffered a fractured cheekbone in this bout, but was able to get Fitzsimmons down on the mat, where he applied an armlock and made the boxer submit. In Europe, around the 19th century, the Italian Giovanni Raicevich, skilled in Greco-Roman wrestling defeated Akitaro Ono, a Japanese heavyweight fighter skilled in Jujutsu, Judo, and Sumo, throwing him on the mat by one-arm shoulder throw. In 1936, heavyweight boxing contender Kingfish Levinsky and veteran professional wrestler Ray Steele competed in a mixed match, which Steele won in 35 seconds.[6] Another early example of mixed martial arts combat was the martial art of Bartitsu, founded in London in 1899, which was the first martial art known to have combined Asian and European fighting styles,[7] and which saw MMA-style contests throughout England, pitting European and Japanese champions against representatives of various European wrestling styles.[7]

Mixed style contests such as boxing vs. jujutsu were popular entertainment throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s.[8] In Japan these contests were known as merikan, from the Japanese slang for "American [fighting]". Merikan contests were fought under a variety of rules including points decision, best of three throws or knockdowns, and victory via knockout or submission.[9]

Professional wrestling died out after World War I and was reborn in two streams: "shoot", in which the fighters actually competed, and "show," which evolved into modern professional wrestling.[6]

In the late 1960s to early 1970s the concept of combining the elements of multiple martial arts had was popularized in America by Bruce Lee via his system and philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. Lee believed that "the best fighter is not a Boxer, Karate or Judo man. The best fighter is someone who can adapt to any style."[attribution needed] In 2004 UFC President Dana White would call Lee the "father of mixed martial arts."[10]
Damn I guess there aint nuthing else to do in carmel,Indiana , he wrote a whole history channel novel bout mma, here's what floyd would have said "the guy in his avatar proves my point bout the 'white America ', step ur game up!!! '

        • Always excuses from Floyd fans. "he's just selling the fight"

no he's not. UFC has nothing to do with boxing. He's making all these racial statements because he's ******ed. Floyd doesnt have the mental capacity to strategically promote his fight by engaging outside venues. He's just not smart enough for that, his brain is the size of a squirrel.

If anything this could turn off the casual fan and will decide on not shelling out $50 on an already lackluster fight. Everyone is getting sick of his mouth.

If floyd were to punch a couple of strippers alot of you would say "he's just sending a message to JMM"

What would you call berating a black man for being appalled by what Mayweather said?

BTW, David Duke would want nothing to do with my brown a$$.
Your views are no different and I'm sure you would be smitten with him. It's ironic how you love to call people "racist" when your screen name was one of the biggest racist in boxing history. BTW, I called out someone who's views on racism are as one sided as yours are. Got it,"Jeffries"?

According to Mayweather, there are no white fighters dominating in the sport of boxing and due to that lack of domination, they got together and started mixed martial arts. Those comments were a direct response to his thoughts on the UFC 103 pay-per-view, which goes head-to-head with his pay-per-view bout with Juan Manuel Marquez on September 19. [details]
Did the author of this article go to college?
That was one of the worst boxing articles I have ever read in my life, extremly poorly written, must have been written at the 5th grade level.

              • In responce to Floyd's comments he clearly embodies many of the most unflattering stereotypes about Blacks, most prominant of those being his lack of intelligence.

In his case though it clearly must be genetic rather than on account of accumalitive damage throughout his career seeing as he hasn't taken much due to his style, which can be described as gutless bitchdom. Also evidenced by his family members, some of whom can't even speak english even though it's their only language.

His ******ity is also evident by his inability to distinguish between American Caucasians and European Caucasians. If that was in fact his intention, which it seemed to be, he was to feeble minded to articulate that properly.

Secondly he obviously has as Napoleonic complex which explains his absence of the knowledge that "Whites" dominate at higher weightclasses, he must refuse to watch "big guys". I guess it is demoralizing to walk around as a fully grown man with the physical stature he has. Christ, most of the woman in my family are taller than him.

And lastly as much as i want to see the Floyd-JMM fight (on account of JMM and not Floyd who endlessly boasts of his drawing power) my distain for Floyd will ensure that i don't order the PVV cuz i couldn't stand knowing that one hard earned penny from myself ended up in his pocket.

P.S. Didn't he have like tens upon tens of millions of dollars and now he's broke? Yeah he's a smart one alright.

Didn't you already post this garbage in another thread? Like I said there, does being a fan of Ali make me a draft dodger? Being a fan of Tyson make me a rapist?

I'm not the one that called Mangler Clarence Thomas for disliking Floyd's racist comments, that'd be you, big guy.
