wtf? the 'bums' that Ortiz fought mostly folded the second Ortiz hit them. And if they didnt, then good for them, Im glad they showed heart.

I dont know how you can possibly call Ortiz a quitter, when it was a two sided war since the first round. the only dominant round Ortiz actually had was the 2nd round, otherwise almost any time Maidana landed a clean punch it had some effect on Ortiz's legs...and I thought Maidana clearly won the 1st round too.

i was at a party and more than one person mentioned that...i thought he should have taken a round off...move, clinch, buy some time...


he was ahead on the cards and its not like Maidana was jabbing...it would have been easy to wrap him up

i don not know what to say, but ppl were comparing vic with vargas, vargas never quit, when he fought trinidad, he was 22, never quit until. he got knock down, in the 12 or 11, round, vargas got heart for real,

Even the great ones have quit. There's no point in continuing when there's no way to win.

I admit I've never seen anyone call the fight off after having scored three knockdowns though. Anything could have happened in that type of fight, the only difference being that Maidana never got discouraged when the pressure was on him.

Still, I can understand Ortiz's decision but based on his post-fight comments, I'm not sure if boxing is the sport for him. You don't have to be a warrior to become "punch-drunk", it can happen to anyone with just a single punch.

Some great responses here and it's fantastic to see people a little more lenient, and some not so great ones.

One thing, I don't agree with what he did in the fight. I also wanted to see him get through his 'test' and come out on top, but he didn't. Maidana did and all praise goes to him, he truly wanted it deep down and was willing to go the distance whereas Ortiz wasn't.

However, just because Ortiz didn't want it as much does not mean he's a quitter, '*****', whatever you want to call him. Sure, he stopped fighting because he didn't think he could win and he was hurt, but the fact he got in there and gave us an incredible fight only to be called such things by a bunch of nameless nobodies is incredible.

Everyone would rather watch someone go through hell and back and win like Maidana did and it was a testament to this guys greatness and will power that he was able to, yet that shouldn't reflect badly on Ortiz. He had obviously given it his all and felt it was over.

When you're in the ring and you've just gone through hell and you're being badly hurt by nearly every punch, your mind goes out the window and all rational thought disappears and by the time the end came it was quite obvious that Ortiz was going to lose. He was getting hurt badly by body shots and his legs were gone. I wanted to see him go on and try to pull a win, but he couldn't and that's that.

Boxers quit all the time, though it may not be so obvious as this. Once you've made up your mind, and it usually gets made up for you, it's over whether that means grabbing on for dear life and not trying to win anymore, whether it means staying down when you could have gotten up, or whether it means telling the ref you don't want to go on, they all quit. There is nothing wrong with that though. I'm quite positive that eighty % of KO's you see the fighters could get up, but their mind has already stopped the fight for them. It's over.

Now, as to all the "It's boxing and he knew what he signed up for.", well, of course it is. He's been doing it his whole life, or do you forget that? He's the one that has been getting in to fight and he's the one that gave it his all for six rounds until he could give no more. Maidana could give more and he did and he won. Both of these guys should be praised for giving a great fight to us boxing fans. Maidana won and showed serious grit and determination. Some people have more determination than others and that is the defining factor.

But, every guy that gets through those ropes to fight for us has a certain amount of determination that should be praised, especially when it shows up in a fight of that caliber. The guy that has more most often comes out on top and the one that doesn't have the same desire loses. That's how boxing goes. Ortiz didn't have the same desire deep down, he was hurt and thought it was over. That's all, and you might not want to praise him or give him any respect for not having the same desire as Maidana but he most certainly does not deserve your spite.

Anyway, good stuff guys. Good posts with level headed conversation, apart from a few minor fools.
