It's not just about Ortiz, this is what hasn't sunk in on you, it's a sport! Imagine if every Ortiz's or anyone else's opponents would quit on the first sign of bad things to come. Manny Pacquiao was KOED, came back to win the p4p #1 crown and has it to this day, Hopkins first fight was a loss, Joe Louis was KOED and ruled a bum before he came back to dominate the HW division in a time there was only one belt and everyone was against him naturally. You need to have heart in boxing and Ortiz failed his heart exam.
I applaud Victor Ortiz for quitting.

IT TAKES A WARRIOR MENTALITY TO EVEN STEP BETWEEN THE ROPES. I'm a fighter and I have had two fights thus far, and I don't know how anyone here could criticize Otrtiz for that. He is so young and much more time to go in his career and more importantly his life that it was best for him to pack it in, call it a day, go rest his head for a while. That was a great fight and the other guy fought admirably as well. No disrespect here for Ortiz, fighter to fighter, cong**** and thanks for a good show.Comment

Wait 1 minute....cotto fighting a top 5 contender who has NEVER been knocked out and cotto gets cut bad, one of the worse cuts you'll see a boxer have and goes the distance and he gets no props for that? What the hell is going on with some of you. He is in line for one of the biggest fights ever and if he wins will be considered one of the best. And this coming from a guy who quit in that margarito fight.....lol
Did Cotto look "better" against Clottey than he did against Shane?
Let me give you an opposite example to de-bunk your statement... and my example will clearly support my disagreement:

It's about time someone came about and simply said "No, I just quit because I didn't want to end up like Ali, and a complete vegetable that can't even speak, just to please a bunch of ****ing ******* on the internet who have absolutely never stepped into the ring at such a high level and had to fight for money and yet have the temerity to call me *****! I would rather come back and fight properly and healthily another day and win."
I think he gave us a good fight and will surely be back, hopefully better than ever and with the mind set to now make sure he doesn't do what wankers like the majority of this board want him to do.
Get over yourselves you bunch of hypocritical ******. Every single one of you would ****e your pants in a second if faced with the prospect of some guy across the ring who has knocked out every single one of his opponents, and he wants to literally pulverize your face into moosh.
Oh, wait, that's right, you all just sit on your arses and play on your computer typing about a fighter who gives you entertainment as being a ***** for providing you with one of the best fights of the year so far! You ****ing bunch of wanking **** ******s. Damn, I'm sick of hearing pathetic little kids whine about a fighter quitting. How many of you have been smashed in the face over and over by a guy with serious power? None of you! Christ, Id like to take a bat to some of you losers calling him a quitter or a *****. Not a single one of you who call him that would even know what it's like to step into that ring and fight someone desperate to kick your head in. You all disgust me.

Some would - and possibly get their careers fucked up as a result.
I just caught the final round on youtube (cheat, I know) while looking for a download. It is what it is, Victor quit, but it was a smart quit. He seems that thoughtful kind of guy who isn't interested in mindlessly following the machismo mentality he grew up around, more power to him. And I'm not knocking the mentality of fighter who would have fought on, either. Everybody's got to make their own choices.Comment

When you name yourself "Vicious", wear the Mexican colors, and brag about how you told your dad "**** you, I'm a man", then you lose the right to become analytical about quitting.
I can tolerate if Mayweather or Lennox Lewis were to quit. Their personas are not wrapped about their machismo. Mexican "warriors" are not allowed to quit.
I agree in a sense, that there's been way too much premature talk of Ortiz being this murderous force with predictions of him laying waste to the 140lb division and even possibly being a threat to Floyd down the line.
I don't think Ortiz -- nickname aside (and I agree again, it's somewhat incongruous, but, hey) -- has wrapped himself in too much of the machismo trip. Really, his own testimony seems to reject a lot of it. Maybe wearing the colors is just intended as a simple, respectful acknowledgement as opposed to an attempt at carrying on some Mexican Badass lineage.Comment

Ironically, for all the **** talk about Mayweather Jr.'s alleged lack of balls/heart, if he ever takes an "L", something about Floyd tells me it will be on his back.

There is different levels of quitting. This kind of reminds me of Vazquez quitting in the Marquez fight. These were incredible fights. Bottomline anybody who watched that fight would have been entertained. I'm more of an Ortiz fan now than i was 24 hours ago. He fought his ass off. Also lets give Maidana credit. He MADE him wave the white flag.Comment
