its harder to quit imo because to keep on fighting is the popular thing to do...To quit actually takes a lot of fortitude.
I cannot belive we have people appluading quitting the only thing you should ever quit is smoking and drugs...if you have a thought in your mind about quitting a boxing match then you should retire perminately....Oscar quit against Pacman and then he retired because he knew he didn;t have the heart to fight on anymore and comepte at the level he wanted to....If you quit you ruin your rep not only in the eyes of the fans but also in your piers eyes and your promoters eyes. And say what you want he works for Oscar and Shane these guys know what it is to get punched in the face a few hundred times and not quit....Lefty

victor ortiz went to the ricky hatton school of defending, but ricky hatton never gave up

i like ortiz though, he has charisma, you could tell in his post fight interview, people shouldnt judge him on one fight

yeah, when you quit, you know you're going to get a lot of criticism... it takes more to quit than to go out on your shield... any bum can get pummeled and stopped, it takes some with real heart to be able to take all the grief, name calling, etc... that the media and NSB posters will do to assassinate your character, especially considering you're of mexican descent who are known for their machismo.

LOL.....its exactly the opposite......i've NEVER in my life heard anyone say it takes guts to quit......

it takes guts to fight on, in adversity, or even when you have little chance of winning....

it takes guts to admit you're wrong/ apologize....

quitting is taking the easy way out.

nah, don't judge him on one fight.....but u can judge him by his post-fight comments.....

from what i heard, dude wants no part of a fight once he gets hurt, which makes me wonder why he's boxing in the first place.....

it also makes me wonder what he'll do if he gets into another fight and gets hurt, which he surely will if he continues boxing.....

I would rather come back and fight properly and healthily another day and win."

I think he gave us a good fight and will surely be back, hopefully better than ever and with the mind set to now make sure he doesn't do what wankers like the majority of this board want him to do.

Get over yourselves you bunch of hypocritical ******. Every single one of you would ****e your pants in a second if faced with the prospect of some guy across the ring who has knocked out every single one of his opponents, and he wants to literally pulverize your face into moosh.

Oh, wait, that's right, you all just sit on your arses and play on your computer typing about a fighter who gives you entertainment as being a ***** for providing you with one of the best fights of the year so far! You ****ing bunch of wanking **** ******s. Damn, I'm sick of hearing pathetic little kids whine about a fighter quitting. How many of you have been smashed in the face over and over by a guy with serious power? None of you! Christ, Id like to take a bat to some of you losers calling him a quitter or a *****. Not a single one of you who call him that would even know what it's like to step into that ring and fight someone desperate to kick your head in. You all disgust me.

You make alot of valid points but I can't say I agree.

Sure, he owes it to himself to look out for his well being and that's fine. But boxing's different, it isn't just entertainment. Your fighthing for yourself, your family, your country, your heratige, and your respect.

There's a reason why I respect Fernando Vargas so much. Because he would never quit. He would risk his life before letting us down. Pure pride....might not have been smart. Be as Teddy Atlas would say, "he behaved like a fighter."

Boxing isn't for everybody. To get the most out of your yourself, to make yourself truly great....you have to be willing to risk it all.

i would never label Ortiz a *****, but he is def a quitter. and if you applaud a fighter for quitting then you're an idiot. being nuetral or having an open mind about it is fine with me, but applauding a fighter for quitting the way ortiz did is just ******.

Also keep in mind, this is Boxing, not Water Polo.

It's a risk going in there and throwing hands with someone for 12 rounds no matter if you're facing a top tier fighter or a 3rd rate club fighter. He quit after 1 round of getting outpointed and cut. I think he should be commended for his attitude towards losing and not being a soar sport, but again...this is Boxing. When you take that type of L and are very nonchalant about it, you better believe your marketability as a fighter people want to see will be diminishing.

One thing about contact sports in general, you gotta have heart. I think Ortiz proved he's not ready for the next level or if he even wants it.

It has nothing to do with him not being smart. The reality is, boxing is a brutal blood sport and if you don't like getting "beat up" as he put it, then go into something else.

A fighter has to want to give it all in there, that's what it takes to be a champion. He's going to get criticised for quitting and rightfully so.

I'm not a internet tough guy, I have boxed and train fighters to this day. I tell them this all the time, this is no game, people die int he ring and you have to be willing to get seriously hurt or even worse of you want to be a great fighter. It is what it is, you may not agree with it but boxing isn't for the feint of heart.

Ortiz is a great prospect with a ton of natural talent but he just doens't have what it takes mentally to be a great fighter.

If every fighter quit when the going got rough, we would never have seen great fighters like Ali, Chavez, Marciano, Lamotta etc in the history of boxing.

The facts are the kid quit and showed zero heart.
