I had Cotto by a single round. 114-113 - same score as Lederman, although I got there a different way.

It was a very, very close fight, but I felt Clottey threw it away with his performance in the final three rounds. He barely threw any punches, yet he didn't seem fatigued. Cotto was still there for the taking with right hands and Clottey didn't take the advantage.

I thought both the Judges who scored for Cotto were way out and must have been swayed by the Rican crowd.

I was impressed with the way Cotto dealt with the cut, but I wasn't that impressed by the performance as a whole. The jury is still out on whether he can get back to the very top again.

I would have been ok with a tie, but the judge scoring it 116-111 for cotto should be lapidated in front of his own familly. Blatant corruption.

Boxing is a great sport, but stuff like this is disgusting.
u said a tie is ok but then call a decision corruption hahahaha ***en idiot

from Caguas, Puerto Ricooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I dont see as much trash talk yet as i expected, maybe its still too early... all i gotta say that if MAYBE it wasnt for that first round knock down, it could either been a DRAW or Clottey could have won. LOTS of respect for Clottey THOUGH i do NOT applaud the acting he was doing as if he was a HOLLYWOOD star!!! I did not like the fact that it brought flashbacks of Margarito's fight in this one, Cotto was backin away too much, i was mad and nervous because Clottey was taking advantage of the fact, though he was tiring too much. IF it wasnt for that HEADBUTT/gash in the eye, it would have been a very different fight. That cut obviously was too big and was bothering Cotto and making him blind, STILL thru all that he fought like a MAN and not complained. As of for Clottey, i thought he hurt his shoulder on that slam, but he came wit a KNEE problem, too much... though the best man WON, i still cant believe one of the judges scoring it 116-111, maybe more like 116-114 i didnt like that score. Much props to both fighters.

Did Cotto deserve the win ? Yes
Did Clottey deserve the win ? Yes
Did Cotto do enough to win the fight ? Yes
Did Clottey do enough to win the fight ? No
Did Cotto put up a good performance ? Yes (considering his opponent stlye)
Did Clottey put up a good performance ? Yes
Was 116-111 fair ? Hell no
Was 115-112 fair ? No, but this judge could had given any of the rounds that were close to Cotto instead of Clottey
Was 114-113 fair ? Yes, in advantage to any of the boxer it would had seem reasonible.
Should Cotto recieve props for this fight ? Yes, Especially fighting under the circumstance that he fought for most of the fight (cut over the eye).
Should Clottey receive props for this fight ? Yes, He demonstrated that he should be considered and rank amoung the best WW. He and his style will create lots of problem for all the WW out there.
Shuould there be a rematch, probably Yes, but it would be a very similar, close fight, due to matchup in styles.
Bottom line i agree with the decision, but i admit it could had gone either way. This is one of the few time that i agreed with Lederman's score card.

When you fight for another boxers belt you have to be more dominating and especially if you are in the others boxer backyard and especifically talking abouth the championship round, 10 thur 12. This is boxing's un written rule nad it doesn't matter who is the champion or where are they fighting.
Clottey won the 10th round but 11 and 12 without a doubt Cotto won them. Both corners told ther boxers that they needed to win the last round because they knew that the fight was up for grabs. When asked after the fight wh he was not as active in the last 2 round he admitted it by saying something like he was being carefull with Cotto (something like that i don't remember his own word) and that's why he lost the fight. Clottey gave the fight away in the last 2 rounds. I was already prepaired to see Clottey's hand raised at the end of the fight thinking that he would be puttimg more presure in these 2 round but for my surpries and joy, he didn't, Clottey was clearly the best conditioned fighter in the ring at that moment but he didn't take advantage.
For those who were saying that Cotto is a quiter and has no chin i guess they might have been shut up with Cotto's performance. Cotto showed heart and determination to win this fight and even though it was not one of Cotto's prettiest fight he desearved and earned the win. No fighter will look dominate against Clottey and his style.
As i said before the fight the outcome and performance of the boxers, win or lose, could raised there value becasue of each fighters stlye and i beleived it did, because both fighters in their own way, won last night and good thing waits ahead for both of them

Clottey won almost every round. He was winning the first so big that you can call it an even round and Cotto wins even fewer rounds. Cong**** Clottey on a great fight that we all know who won. Gift. 116-111...WTF?? Hometown gift and it makes Boxing look bad.

I really don't understand the problem here, i thought Clottey would win going into the fight. Miguel clearly outboxed him, whilst dabbing at his cut all fight. His defence was pretty good, but i didnt understand his little half Philly shell thing he insists on doing as Clottey eventually caught him. Cotto would end every exhange in the first 6 with a solid left hook. Beating Clottey in the corner early and then just boxing the rest of the fight. Clottey got hurt, Cotto didnt. I really dont understand the problems. I dont want to argue but i really haven't heard a coherent explaination of why Miguel was "gifted".

Peering through blood and with a hideous gash that ripped open his right eyebrow in the third round, courtesy of an unintentional clash of heads, Cotto obtained the split-decision win on the cards of two of the three official judges.

Judge John McKaie saw it 115-112 for the defending champion, Don Trella was way off base at 116-111 also for Cotto, whereas Tom Miller had it 114-113 for Clottey. This writer scored it 115-113 for Clottey.

CompuBox saw Clottey landing more punches (222-179) and he had the edge in power punches (168-124). Cotto landed one more jab (55-54).

There was a lot of talk over the weekend about this fight. No matter where you went or who you asked, everybody had an opinion about who was going to win and who was going to lose. With the annual Boxing Writers Association of America dinner held here on Friday and the big fight on Saturday there was no shortage of boxing types kicking around town. [details]
