Calzaghe and Dawson: a double standard about fighting old opponents
Collapse
-
Joe made his entire career off fighting street sweepers and cab drivers.
You should be ashamed to even go there..but it's obvious Joe's *****-style fans have no shame.
He even fought the LOSER of an elimnation bout between Echols and Brewer..
Nobody in history has punk-out that hard.
Slappy defended his title against Tokker Pudwell when the SHOT TO HELL Thomas Tate pulled-out.
Now you tell me nuttsucker..
HOW THE **** DID THOMAS TATE DESERVE A TITLE SHOT???It's been beaten to death about 3,000 times. Look up old threads if you wanna read the same relies again, OK? You're saying nothing that you haven't already ranted about countless times in the past.
I love the fact that you're still really pissed off about Joe Calzaghe. He has truly ruined your life. Brilliant!

Interview with Jay Larkin of Showtime from December 2002:
"But to be fair to Joe, he's had some terrific fights on the books that have fallen apart at the last minute," continued Larkin. "It's almost like he's snakebit and he's had to face replacement guys who have like two, three, four weeks notice and it seems like it just keeps happening and it's apparently legitimate. I have no reason to think it's not legitimate because all these guys are independent of Frank, they're coming in from other promoters.
"The Charles Brewer fight (in April) held on and it was a great fight. There was a moment where we thought we had an Antwun Echols fight made and it fell apart."
Showtime tried to make the fight with Echols, it fell apart, and Larkin made clear that that wasn't Calzaghe's fault. So the Brewer fight was made instead.Comment

Eubank was slightly past it, yeah, but still put up a very difficult fight. After Joe, he went on to fight the only guy who ever beat David Haye, Carl Thompson. IMO, he won the first fight, but the second was stopped because of a cut. Eubank, as you saw from the Calzaghe-Eubank fight, was still a dangerous opponent. Use your eyes. Eubank's problem was he was scared of truly hurting anyone after the Michael Watson tragedy. Regardless, watch the Calzaghe-Eubank fight and tell me that he wasn't still a worthy opponent for a green 25 year old who, 2 weeks earlier, was preparing for a completely different opponent. The Eubank fight was a GREAT win. Not just good, but one the very best on his resume.Comment

More revisionism in order to promote your hate agenda.

Joe didn't have any opportunities to fight them earlier, he wasn't a big enough name to interest them when they were in their primes and he was in a different weight class from both of them. It was only after the Lacy fight that he started to become a fairly big name in the States. Before that almost no one outside Britain had even heard of him. And he did try to make those fights in 2001-2002, but didn't have the commercial appeal to make the fights happen.Comment

Jones and Toney wouldn't go to the UK so it was both their faults as well as the promoters. Hopkins did say he would go to Britain for the rematch tho.Comment

Jones was a Light Heavyweight, and Calzaghe didn't bring enough money to the table back then to interest him, because he was a complete unknown outside Britain, and in a different weight division.Comment

2: Both were in different divisions. Roy moved up to LH a whole year before Calzaghe even won a strap. Considering this, why the hell did people even EXPECT them to fight? They were not even obliged to do so.
3: Roy made more money staying in America fighting bigger names. Joe Calzaghe at that time offered very little, so you can hardly blame Roy for not fighting him, Calzaghe simply wasn't a big enough name. He was high risk for low reward.
4: Roy Jones has never fought outside America. Why is it OK for Americans to stay at home and never fight outside their comfort zone, but Joe Calzaghe, who only has fought in his country (yes, Wales is a separate country and people outside Wales are often biased and hateful towards the Welsh) 17 times out of 46 fights, get **** for it?
Double standards once again.
Some people need to take their heads from out of their asses and realize that America isn't be the be-all-end-all. There is life outside of the USA. And this is coming from a person who was born in the USA.

Jones left a year or two after Toney claiming Calzaghe is not a big enough name to warrant a fight at the time. Something he said again round about the time Hopkins ducked Calzaghe in 2002.Comment
