Calzaghe and Hopkins had almost identical careers, the biggest differences are Calzaghe beating the up and comers of his division before moving up in weight (Lacy, Kessler) unlike Hopkins who lost to Taylor twice, Calzaghe being 2-0 against the two greats of his era whereas Hopkins was 0-2 and Calzaghe remaining unbeaten.
Anyone impartial would have to pick Calzaghe.
I'm convinced most of the Hopkins love on this forum is the result of Calzaghe hate. I can't remember anywhere near the amount of praise he gets now before the Calzaghe fight.
Both calzaghe and hops respective middleweight and super middleweight reign included pretty soft opposition. Both them started to get recognition at the end of reign.
There is not a man on hopkins resume that he beat that I do not think calzaghe could not beat and vice verse.
Calzaghe does have a win over hopkins but that was an older hopkins and calzaghe was closer to his prime.
Calzaghe style would have given a prime hopkins promblems because he is not as clever as his now back then. A prime hopkins would have given calzaghe problems as well because of his activity, accuracy, and power.
I guess if i had to pick it would be hopkins. He has more names on his resume than calzaghe and even thou he did not win all them he was pretty close. Plus to me a fighter gets more credit for actually fighting the fights and losing than not taking on those fights at all.
It might not be calzaghe fault that he was not able to get the types of fights hopkins got but beating the version of Jones jr he beat is the equivalent of oscar beating chavez. It proves nothing except a prime fighter beats an old fighter.
I have no problem with someone having calzaghe higher but I have hopkins higher
glen johnson anyone? the man hopkins dominated and the same guy calzaghe pulled out of 2 fights with. one time the night before the fight claiming he hurt his hand. talk about being scared. not sure how you can say calzaghe would beat him when he was too scared to step foot in the same ring as him.

hopkins was 40 when he fought taylor and should have won those fights. calzaghe was 35 when he fought the so called great lacy and kessler. taylor is also a lot better than those guys by far as you can see when he dominated lacy. a 35 year old calzaghe could barely beat bika without cheating and the refs help. lets see what a 40 year old calzaghe could do. more than likely he would get destroyed by any top fighter.
