Everyone on this site who says negative things about Mayweather are stating opinions and using revisionist history as Larry Merchant, who has always hated Mayweather, did Saturday night. Things such as "he hasn't fought the best," "he ducks people", "he won't fight a real welterweight, and "he only fights smaller guys" have absolutely no basis in fact if you look at his history and the things that have happened in his career. Its either that or the critics have only been watching boxing for two or three years. I have been following boxing for 20 years. I saw Mayweather stop Genaro Hernandez (Hernandez was favored) and Diego Corrales (Corrales was favored) both in their primes at 130 I also saw him then move up and beat Jose Luis Castille (the Ring Magazine champion) twice in his prime at 135. I remember when he tried to secure a fight against Ricky Hatton in his FIRST fight at 140 (before Hatton fought Kostya Tyszu) after only two fights at 135 against Castille. Hatton's promoter turned the fight down without even considering it. I remember the two separate occasions when Mosley turned down fights against Mayweather at 147. One time he said he needed two tune-ups befere he would be ready for Mayweather. The other time he said he had a tooothache (which was code for "my wife won't let me."). Mayweather fought De La Hoya instead. I remember when he wanted to fight Cotto at 140 when both were promoted by Arum, but Arum said "wait." I remember when he fought Judah and Baldomir in consecutive fights at Welterweight (Judah was #1 and Baldomir was the Ring Champion at the time) Unfortunately, neither Larry Merchant nor any of the haters on this site include any of these facts when they criticize Mayweather. And for that reason, I won't waste time arguing with the haters because nothing will change, no matter what the facts may say.

This writer, Lyle Fitzimmons has just exposed himself as one of the most biased Floyd nuthuggers around. Proof?
Meanwhile, after sitting for what’ll be more than 18 months, Floyd comes back not to meet a bottom feeder or a fringe contender as an appetizer – but a reigning world champion who’s a three-division belt-holder and the consensus choice as No. 2 pound-for-pound in the world.
What Fitzimmons conveniently failed to mention here is that this No.2 pound-for-pound in the world fighter's last two fights were fought at 135 lbs. where he looked a lot slower and a bit fudgy than when he fought Pacquiao at junior lightweight, and that Mayweather is forcing him to come up to 144 for the fight, when Mayweather walks around at 147 and could very well make 140 if he wants to. WTF?!! Floyd is actually fighting someone who is a lot smaller than him and saying that he is fighting the best opposition available?
Then, how about this:
And while I’ll concede that Pacquiao’s rare combination of speed and power present a challenge unique to any Mayweather’s faced, it’s far less daunting than what Merchant figures to endure while summoning the nerve to do the post-fight interview with a victorious arch enemy.
This is a veiled statement that actually says FLOYD WILL NO DOUBT BEAT PACQUIAO!
You might as well get a pair of pompoms and shout FLOYD IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME RAH! RAH! RAH!
Yeah, right. LOL!Comment

if you are the greatest. you dont need no tune up fight and dont need to fight smaller boxer than you.Comment

You obviously missed the point when people say that Floyd ducks the best competition available. What they mean is that he is ducking the best available competition in the welterweight division. You're in denial if you say otherwise. If you say he is not ducking anybody, then why the hell is he even fighting Marquez?Comment

The fight involves two of the game's marque' names but I won't bet the house that this match is sure to be exciting. I look at Money and think of him as one who has the well-deserved reputation of being a defensive specialist, even, some say, genius.
Then, I look at Marquez and note that for most of his life he was a counter-puncher and initiated exchanges only in recent fights.
If JMM waits for opportunities to counter-punch (because that's what he does best, and he believes that it should be what he should do against an opponent with the quality of a Floyd Jr.), then, I'm afraid that we, spectators, are going to be in for a very, very long evening.
Unless, Mayweather, thinking that Marquez is too small, abandons defense and goes in. But, fat chance of that happenning.Last edited by grayfist; 05-05-2009, 08:06 PM.Comment
