My two cents on pacman vs cotto

    1. Arum hates floyd.
    2. Arum knows that cotto will try to leave top rank (Co ntract expires on December) due to the whole Margo thing.
    3. Pacman is the biggest star in boxing

    Arum's solution.
To offer the Pacman fight to Cotto (December) as an incentive to sign a contract extension with Top Rank for 2 or three more years. That way he can make cotto vs pacman happen which will be easy to make between top rank fighters. Expecting Pacman to beat Cotto, then he will still trow him against Mayweather.

    This way
    1. He gets the income from a pacman vs cotto from both ends being both top rank fighters. Both with a huge fan base$$$$$$
    2. He gets to have Cottto for a couple of more years (against mosley, maybe PW and depending on what happens to Margarito). $$$$$$
    3. After Pacman defeats Cotto he will still make the fight Pacman vs Mayweather $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

There could be two things in this. One obviously is the cash cow angle. Arum knows Pacquiao is good for two more BIG fights at most. This one and that of Floyd.

Another is that this could just be a bait plan in case Marquez wins against Floyd, not likely but possible. If this happens Marquez will naturally call out Pacquiao. While a 3rd Marquez fight would be good, it may not necessarily be a high PPV event unlike a Floyd fight. If only after the Marquez win that they decide to fight Cotto then they will be presumed to have ducked Marquez. Arum is playing his cards well.

How many times has Bob Arum said something that didn't happen. I'd say about 90 percent of the times he opens his mouth. If Mayweather beats Marquez, Mayweather-Pacquaio is next. And in spite of what Arum says, Mayweather will get the biggest percentage of the purse because he is the bigger draw. The one who is the bigger draw is the biggest star. Mayweather/De La Hoya drew 2.2 million PPV buys; Pacquaio/De La Hoya drew 800,000. Mayweather/Hatton drew 800,000 in the U.S. and 1.2 million in the UK. If Pacquaio/Hatton draws less than 2.2 million worldwide, Pacquaio is not a bigger star than Mayweather. Lets see how many PPV buys Pacquaio/Hatton draws before Arum decides who is the bigger star.

The fact is 40 percent of a Mayweather fight will secure Pacquaio more money than 70 percent of a Cotto fight.

This scenario makes perfect sense. I had forgotten that Cotto was at the end of his contract with Arum. I agree. I think Arum will try his best to match Pacquaio with Cotto. This is another example of Arum thinking about his bottom line instead of his fighters. God forbid Pacquaio should lose or suffer a career-threatening injury and lose out on the $20 million he would have gotten to fight Mayweather. He should be happy with the $8 million Arum will throw at him to fight Cotto. Hopefully, Pacquaio will choose Mayweather instead when Mayweather beats Marquez.

The best part about boxing is that you can say whatever you want. That's what Arum learned from Don King. In reality it never matters what you Say....it just matters that Something happens. The best fight is Floyd v. Manny, but I'd pay to see Manny v. Mosely and even Manny v. Cotto.
