The shoulder roll has been around since before Toney or Maywather Sr.

and before Locche too, but Locche's defense looks a lot more like Mayweather's than some of the older guys.

Eubank liked to use that technique aswell, and came to prominence shortly afterwards.. Wonder if he studied Toney on the quiet, envisaging a possible match.. Would've like to have seen that.. Think Toney would've edged it on points..

The shoulder roll has been around as long as boxing.

June 19th 1936, Joe Louis uses the "Toney defense" to defend against two right hands while on the ropes.

            Mayweather perfected it.

The shoulder roll has been around far longer than James Toney.

James Toney never invented the shoulder roll. The shoulder roll has been getting used for many many years.

Toney learnt if off watching old school fighters, mainly the great Archie Moore.

Have you heard the expression "roll with the punches?" It's old, as is the shoulder roll. In fact your grandfather and great-grandfather probably knew how to shoulder roll if they grew up in the city.
